« on: April 20, 2012, 06:54:04 PM »
I'm setting up a old PIII Computer for my Sister In Law using OpenBox 2011.08, all seems to work ok except the
Volume Control in the sys tray!, I have tried setting up the Mixer and the Volume preferences for the 'Volume Icon 0.4.1'
Only 'PCM' works !.

[carole@localhost ~]$ ps aux | grep -i mix
carole   21371  0.9  6.5  59660 29172 ?        Sl   00:32   0:12 /usr/bin/python -OO /usr/bin/gmixer

carole   21701  0.2  6.4  59688 28732 ?        Sl   00:35   0:02 /usr/bin/python -OO /usr/bin/gmixer
carole   23631  0.0  0.1   4292   752 pts/1    S+   00:54   0:00 grep --color -i mix

Any help please.

Hi,
What is the brand of the sound card ? You can type
Code: [Select]
$ lspci | grep Audio
Have you tried other mixers, for example "alsamixer" in console or alsamixergui ?

You say only PCM works, this might depend on the device and the driver for the device : do you have sound anyhow ?

Not tried any other mixers yet .
Yes I have sound but its only controllable with the PCM setting on the mixer .
$ lspci | grep Audio  = Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS7012 AC'97 Sound Controller (rev a0)

Second Machine..
Tonight I have reinstall openbox on another machine I mainly use to listen to the BBC iplayer music (in the uk).
This has the same problems eg Sys tray volume does not work then if you right click on it and open up the mixer only PCM works.
It also has another problem that I have no control of sound coming from the internal speaker which I want to turn off.

$ lspci | grep Audio =   Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)

Hi,

Some of my older machines also have PCM enabled only. I think this is probably a driver related problem. About the internal speaker I don't know : what type of computer is this ? (brand and model).

Can you try alsamixer in the console ? (and or other mixers) ?

Any help please.

If using the PCM slider controls your volume, what exactly is the problem with using it?

Can you set the master control to PCM? Doing so, it should function fine.

Hi,
Yes you can. Right-click on the icon of Volumeicon. Choose preferences. You will get a window, in this window in the part that say "Left Mouse Button Action" select "Show Slider". Then click on the button "Close" which is down at the right side.

You can select the channel from the button just under "Alsa", next to Channel if it is not done yet. I let you look at the other opetions. (Hotkeys for instance).

It is usually better to explain what result you are looking for... :)
