Fax s/w for Epson?
« on: April 19, 2012, 11:44:09 AM »
I think I tried this question once before, I'll try one more time:  Would like some kind of FAX driver for Epson WP-4530, to at least send, and if possible read received, FAXes
from an Epson WP-4530 All-In-One machine.  Epson does not supply any Linux drivers or information, but I've got the printing and scanning working fine with Linux
software.  Does anybody here know of a generic driver for Linux that will work with this machine?
(Tried to copy the FAX software from a Windows machine and install it in WINE, but some of it would not install, so that approach doesn't work.  It's possible I don't know
enough about WINE to "fix" it.  Also, it would be nice if PCLOS would update the WINE and Wine-prefix files in the repo to the latest, but I don't know if that would matter.)

Thanx for looking, and any advice--doug

I guess it's Wine-tricks, not Wine-prefix.  Or are there two files?

OK, you're right, I did get the printer driver, but there is no FAX driver on that site, and the Q&A does not mention FAX at all, only printing and scanning.
So the question remains--is there a compatible driver that will work with this machine?  When I looked thru the Forum a couple of weeks ago, all I saw relative to FAX was HP.

Would the machine be considered a "FAX modem?" And if so, would it be able to read as well as send faxes? I am new to the FAX world.  There was a dedicated FAX
machine at work (10 years ago--I'm retired) not connected to any network.  AFAIK, the machine will send and read FAXes from the Windows machine, but there is
Epson s/w to do that.

I admit that FAX processing from the computer is icing on the cake--I don't use FAX very often, and getting up to do it on the AIO is no real problem, it would just be nice.

Thanx for reminding me that I did find the printer driver before--I had forgotten already!  Senior moment!

There is efax in the repository which uses any modem that is supported by the OS, IIRC.

It is a few years since I used it.

It would I suppose depend on the modem in the fax machine being supported ......

I have XSane Scanning set up, which seems to use the Epson files that I downloaded and installed--at least it recognizes that the scan devide is Epson, so I guess it does.
Anyway: looking more carefully at the GUI window that comes up when you select the Epson and scan something, there is a selection in a pull-down menu for FAX.
The documentation (THANK YOU, SANE devs!) says it requires Hylafax or another--name not on the tip of my pen--program.  So maybe it will all come together and work.
I will pursue this, and let the Forum know what I find out.  It may take a couple of days, since I have to setup someone I know to receive the FAX, if I can actually send it.
So be patient, please.
And thank you to those who have responded.
