xfs ... do we need X font server ?

Do we still need xfs service (X font server) ?

Just out of curiosity, I have disabled this service on my system a few months ago ... without evident adverse effects ...  ::)

Hmmm. Seems like it should be named something else. I thought it was for X filesystem. Anyway, Synaptic says it's a font server for a remote X connection. Seems like a very limited use case, doesn't it? Then again, someone may need it to display wingdings on Grandma's remote laptop. From a quick net search, I can't tell what the latest version is.

Actually it should disappear completely!  ;D

It's the X Font Server, an abomination created to mutualize font handling in an environment full of X servers.

guess ... but I'm not 100% sure ... it is not used anymore from Xorg Xserver ...

Just out of curiosity, I have disabled this service on my system a few months ago ... without evident adverse effects ...   ::)

How was that achieved AS - uninstalling it or by another method?

Edit - the following "appears" to do it:

service xfs stop chkconfig xfs off

Control center -> System -> Manage services  -> xfs [ on / off ]

Aaah - thanks AS

The command stops it but it would restart after a fresh boot.

Actually it should be equivalent, only that are two commands:
Quote
service xfs stop ; chkconfig xfs off

On my minimal installs (execpt the server) I have this disabled by default (or removed)

Its useful if you are using x-forwarding
