Yet another 2012.02 install went ok but......
« on: April 17, 2012, 09:30:31 PM »
I Installed 2012.02 just as I have several times before with other versions but now I'm not allowed to log in with my user name and password. the message I get is: configuration file "/home/cj/.kde4/share/congig/knotifyrc" not writable. Contact your system administrator.
and
The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE: No write access to /home/cj/.ICEauthority. KDE is unable to start.

I can however log in as root without a problem but without use of my /home directory.
Help!

I think you meant to say it is in the following path "/home/cj/.kde4/share/config/knotifyrc"

The permissions for knotifyrc should be 644 or -rw-r--r--  and the UID and GID should be set to the user.
For Example mine is
Code: [Select]
-rw-r--r-- 1 dwmoar dwmoar    39 Mar  8  2011 knotifyrc

As for the .ICEauthority I do not have it.   What is the UID and GID for this file/folder and what permissions does it show???

Thanks for the help. Before we go any further, I am a novice at computer speak. I am mostly just a user from the "Windows" world. That being said, A - you were right about"config" being misspelled. B - While logged in as "root" (the only way I'm allowed) my user name "cj" is not shown on any directory search, but I did find "knotifyrc". This file is owned by "root" and UID and GID are unassigned. As for .ICEauthority, I cannot find it, either with a manual or automated search.

Hey PCLuser,
As a simple test, try creating a new user from your root desktop.
That's in PCC>System>Manage user
Do you have data in your jc user you'd like to preserve?

btw welcome to the forum.  ;D

What do you mean that you are only allowed to log in as root???  No one should EVER use root to run their desktop, you are just asking for problems if you do! If you are having issues logging into your Desktop using your user name than post what error(s) you are getting and what you did when you got them.

Another thing you can do, as the root user, is to remove (delete) the .kde4 in the /home/cj folder. than log out and try logging in as your username, NOT ROOT.  Post back if you get any errors.  Doing this will cause KDE to recreate it configuration files (.kde4) as if it were starting out with the correct permissions.

Are you saying that it is bad to make a new user if for some reason you can only log into root? I have done this before without mishap, but I may have been lucky. But it worked for me.
I do understand that running as root wholesale is asking for trouble, but to create a new user seems safe to me.
Just wanted to clarify.  ;D

Actually one does not need to be in the root desktop to create a new user, thought being in the root desktop may be safe if that is all one does. I can not really think of a good reason to be logged into the root desktop, than again I not a point and click only type of person.

But the reason I suggested it was that OP could only log into root.  ;D
