During Google I came across a thread in our Forum and picked up on, following which I guess answers the question
[gert@KDE-mini-kernel3x ~]$ rpm -qa | grep nvidia
dkms-nvidia-current-295.40-1pclos2012
x11-driver-video-nvidia173-173.14.31-1pclos2012
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-295.40-1pclos2012
dkms-nvidia173-173.14.31-1pclos2012
[gert@KDE-mini-kernel3x ~]$
Above system of course runs the nouveau driver now.
[root@KDE-mini-Cprog gert]# rpm -qa | grep nouveau
nouveau-firmware-20091212-1pclos2010
x11-driver-video-nouveau-0.0.16-0.20110613.5pclos2011
[root@KDE-mini-Cprog gert]#
I am going back to my kernel-2.6 environment and repeating the above for comparison. Just using Synaptic I could not make out any difference in nvidia components.
My kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs system (this has now picked up some funny colour splash lines on boot, which I can't see has anything to do with the kernel-3.2.15 I have compiled but I am keeping this in mind)
[root@KDE-mini-Cprog gert]# rpm -qa | grep nvidia
x11-driver-video-nvidia173-173.14.30-1pclos2011
dkms-nvidia173-173.14.30-1pclos2011
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-290.10-1pclos2011
[root@KDE-mini-Cprog gert]#
I take back the comment on seeing the same in Synaptic for the two installs.
