I think we all should back off and let them get things organized so PCLinuxOS will continue as it has.....

I agree.  This should not lessen anybody's spirit for PCLinuxOS.  I do understand why this is done and laying down the law the first time is always a process not loved by many.  However, once the guidelines are in place, which they are, and everybody knows what he/she is up against, future endeavours can be build along those lines and nothing will stop anybody to make a e17, Xfce, Openbox, WinMaker, JWm, IceWM or any other community version of PCLinuxOS as long as he stays in the laid out framework.

As far as Sproggy is concerned - I'll miss his input here knowing what knowledgeable and honest guy he is.  I'll certainly am testing his Phinx and will stay in contact with him that way - and really looking forward to his adventures once he does change the base.  I might learn a thing or two in the process.

No one has removed the Phoenix ISO from our downloads. It remains available. Kori disagreed with our policies for community releases and asked for someone to take it over.

You are out of line here, Alex. Topics do not get arbitrarily locked or removed. Go read the rules. We enforce them. Even when such enforcement is unpopular, we will do so and apply those rules to everyone as equably as is humanly possible. Why? Please go read the rules, then think about it. We do not want chaos here, therefore we sometimes must do what is distasteful for us, i.e. remove or lock. Someone has to do the hard jobs, and we got "volunteered."

Well  all I can say is I am very dissappoint if nobody continues with Phoenix as I always use limited computers and it is the best distro I have tried on this type of hardware.

Will miss Sproggy.  :'(

"Phoenix" belongs to Sproggy. However, we will offer an XFCE release when and as we can.

XFCE 4.10 is in testing section (32-bit) and can be tested by the PCLinuxOS testers!

I'm on vacation at this moment and typing this reply on a Asus Transformer Tablet.
I'm at home at Monday, Sept.,10th for one day and test XFCE 4.10 shortly.

Hopefully there more testers available for XFCE 4.10 then.

I'm fully available at Sept.,21st again.

Greetings; JohnW

Xfce 4.12 Planned For March, GTK3 Still Uncertain

While most of the Linux desktop talk these days is about Unity, KDE, and GNOME, advancing in a quiet but steadfast manner is Xfce. The next major release of Xfce, version 4.12, is due out in March. It's undecided at this time though whether Xfce 4.12 will use GTK2 or GTK3.

Xfce 4.10 was released in April of this year and uses GTK2 as it's tool-kit rather than the newer GTK3 from GNOME. From the Xfce 4.12 road-map they do have an aim to switch to GTK3 for this next feature release, but it might not happen.

Some developers aren't convinced by GTK3 and there's also limited development resources for converting the GTK2 code-base to GTK3. There may, however, be experimental build support for using GTK3 for those interested.

There were some interesting comments on the topic made earlier this month on the Xfce development list. Additionally, "We would definitely want to see Gnome 3 applets and Unity indicators in Xfce. The problem with the former is that Gnome 2 applets are gone (Mate?) and, as you said, Gnome 3 panel isn't particularly loved either. As for Unity indicators - our main issue with them is poor maintenance. Interfaces are being deprecated more often than we can make releases."

Aside from the GTK3 possibility, other Xfce 4.12 features are still being developed.

In terms of the Xfce 4.12 road-map, the first pre-release is planned for the end of January at which time there will be the feature feeze, the string freeze and "pre2" releaaw in mid-February, "pre3" and the code-freeze in late February, and the Xfce 4.12 final release around mid-March.

JW - I used the task-xfce method for installing it alongside KDE-2012-08 and the install went like a charm.

Not being a regular XFCE user I'm unsure if it's designed this way or if............  but the panel was just an "empty" small white rectangle (see top left in screenshot)

I was able to move it and add "regular" panel items (see screenshot below)

The few apps that I tested all worked fine.

Missing some packages to update  I think, the XFCE control center (like KCC on KDE4) is empty on my install.
There' s nothing to configure the XFCE desktop!

Test report soon  in Testing section.
