Radeon HD 6870 HD Video Card no sound in PCLinuxOS
« on: April 17, 2012, 05:27:13 AM »
Was able to tinker about and get the sound working on this Radeon HD 6870 HD Video Card in Ubuntu 11.10, but I didn't like the closed in feeling of Ubuntu, got it working in Mint, but there were strange graphic issues that made a lot of icons and what not unreadable.  Got PCLinuxOS up and running, so far it feels a lot better than Ubuntu, and I'm not getting the strange graphic problems, but I can't seem to get the sound going through the HD on the video card.  I've tried ALSAConf, I've searched the repository, its using (don't have the machine on at the moment) a driver with "intel" in the title.

hello and welcome to the forum!

no sound at all or just under web broser and specific apps?

you need the amd video driver for that card on all distros since the basic driver won't be enoug for it, there is a couple posts talking about this on this forum, how to install it and set it correctly just using synaptic package manager

if you don't have sound at all this suggest me that it is not related to the video card, what sound card do you have?

what version of pclinux did you installed?

PCLinuxOS KDE Desktop 2012, the sound I am trying to use is the HDMI sound through the HDMI port on the video card.  I had it working under the latest version of Ubuntu and Mint, but Ubuntu was too restrictive, and Mint had graphical problems with the desktop that I could find an explanation nor a fix for.  Its been a while since I seriously installed a LiNUX distribution on a computer, I used to use Slackware, but I wanted to try something shiny for a change.  The ATI software was installed, and the video is working great, but I can't seem to get the HDMI sound as I had with Win7, Ubuntu and Mint.

hdmi port uses a bridge to move sound from the soundcard to the hdmi port

this makes system believe there is two sound cards and creates the problem

maybe this post can help you, it requires pulseaudio

I had read through those very posts, for some reason it made sense this time, with a few extra tweaks with Synaptic pulling in a few more things its working now.  Thank you very much!

Well . . .  I broke all the sound trying to get it to work in the web browser . . .   Back to square one if I can find that again.
