synaptic download errors

Practically all the time I download something--an upgrade or a new program--I get a message that some errors have occurred.  I haven't noticed any problems that I could
trace to this, but there must be a reason for noting the situation,  and no solution is presented.  What gives?

did you reladed before trying to update?

waht repo are you using?

I always reload before updating.  I'm using heanet.ie, per a recommendation on this forum quite a while ago.

then Reload and try again.

Dougmack, I think the message you are referring to is feedback from a succcessful update, rt?
After the update synaptic gives you a window saying errors "Errors ocurred" or somesuch. Me too. But in my experience there is no effect. More informed folks than me said to ignore it.

If you are referring to the small window after an update with stuffs like gtk-icon-cache: no index file so anything similar then there's two ways of looking at it. One is the warnings and this can be safely ignored. The other listing when errors occur may not be good and should be reported unless otherwise deemed that they can be safely ignored too.

Or he may be referring to an error that occurs when Calibre is updated.

Well, yes, I just saw this (again) after updating calibre.  I have seen it fairly often, probably most often when there are a batch of files to be updated or installed at once.
I think the errors are what johnmart talks about in his reply.  I can't replicate the problem right now--everything is updated as of this afternoon.  If there is a problem with
calibre, I will probably never know it, since I have no e-book reader.  (Don't know why I have calibre, actually--maybe at one time I thought it would allow me to _read_
e-books on the computer, but I don't think it does. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.) 

As I said, I can't say that I've seen any bad result of these "errors"--if indeed they are same. But it does seem odd that it would be reported if there aren't any.  Is
it possible that Synaptic is reporting errors that it also corrected?

If you have e-books calibre has a reader. It doesn't seem to handle lit format, but will convert lit to any e-book format you choose.

As far as the random error messages from synaptics....well I try to read them all, but unless I detect some urgency, or some direct action is recommended, I make a mental note and wait for a problem to arise.

Your mental notes must be a lot better than mine. I capture the error messages to a text file, unless I know they're harmless.

Unless you provide more info, it is hard to give any answer to you. "I get errors" tells us only the barest beginning of the story. Copy and paste the error(s) from the synaptic feedback window, so we can read it/them.     
So far, you've been given some good answers - as guesses, from some very knowledgeable people. Provide details instead of a 'story' and see if more complete answers can be given.

My memory is not so great, I am a lazy student. That's why I always end up here! And look for your insight.

Reply to Neal ManBear et al:  When I see the problem again, I will save the information to this forum.  Right now the system is up-to-dare, and I don't need
anything new that's available from the repo, so I don't have anything to post.  --doug
