Wifi not working from time to time [SOLVED]
« on: April 15, 2012, 08:25:49 AM »
Hello all,

I've got a weird problem here...
My wifi stops working from time to time and I have to manually open the network center and click connect again. After that it works again but after some time (about 10 minutes) it stops working again and I always get the server not found error in my firefox. But the weird thing is that it won't reconnect on it's own, I have to do it manually.

Anyways, I'd appreciate any help/suggestions/tips.

Hehe, nope that's not the problem I'm having. Thanks for the tip though  :)
O and maybe it would be useful to know I have an Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection according to the network center.

Maybe some neighbour bought a (new) router and interferes with your signal. Did you try changing the channel in your router? Worked for me when I had similar problems.
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Thanks, I'm gonna try this out right now and report back if it worked.

Thanks to you too but as I said above I'm gonna try the solution from AS since it seems the easiest. And I
wouldn't know how to change the channel so if you could please tell me how to do so I could try it if the
 solution from AS fails.

Edit: unfortunately, the solution from AS doesn't work :(. So I'm gonna try another channel.

Hi FriendlyLion,

to change the channel you need to access the router setup, usually through a browser interface (like www.routerlogin.net or an ip you enter in the address line of your router). It's not an OS setting, it's a network hardware thing.

The channel is normally chosen automatically, but with other wifi networks in close range, that may not always work as intended, because the other routers will also try to find the best channel. Choose the highest or lowest channel and see if it helps. If it won't be stable, walk through the channels.

It happened to me exactly as you described it and changing the channel was the solution.

Please report if it worked.

Not really, the only thing I can add is that the iwl3945 driver improved greatly on newer kernels which are currently in testing, be patient!  ;)

Here is a question that I don't think was asked yet. What kind of signal do you normally get? Is it full bars?
Does this only happen at home with your own equipment?
Also when you leave your computer and come back and it's off. Does anything ever block the router enough that it might lose the signal enough to shut off?

I have this problem with a wifi connection I use sometime. It is a free wifi source. However where I use it sometimes is a weak signal and if a few people or an object blocks the access point I sometimes lose the connection. Then sometimes it reconnect on it's own, sometimes it has to be done manually.

Since all seems lost I thought I would throw a few more ideas into the mix. Good or bad, it can't hurt.

Good luck.

No it is not full bars, 3 out of 5 normally.
I get this problem everywhere with my laptop. But I did some testing with another distro and it didn't have this problem! So it has to be something with PCLOS I think... Which is not good news for me as I am completely in love with this distro and want to keep using it! Everything is working out so good now so this problem is a real pain in the... well you know :p

Hey all!
I've finally found a solution!
I was looking around in synaptic and stumbled upon wicd. I installed it and set it up and waited... Then after some time the internet turned off again... :( Same problem I thought, but then the magic happened! Wicd reconnected itself!
As you can see it's not fixed but at least the main problem I had (which is having to manually reconnect) is gone.
I can't believe I didn't try this before but hey better late than never!

Now I can enjoy this distro even more  ;D
