aspire one 722 no wireless (solved)
« on: April 13, 2012, 01:02:02 AM »
this has turned out to be a good little lappy and linux is running well but im getting an error when i try to get the wireless working. i dont think its even enabling. it appears that the wireless is working in many other distros so well that there isint much about it being a problem ::). i cant figure out why it doesnt seem to work at all with pclos. ??? there is not much for wireless problems on an internet search. the error is "unable to find network interface for selected device using ath9k driver". the only thing that is not stock is the ssd drive i installed.

well after some more research it appears that the model 722 has a couple of different wireless cards and the one i have is possibly the problem child. i also read somewhere that if you disable the wireless in win before you load linux it can keep the card disabled ???. i dont know how this could be possible unless win does somthing at the bios level. im going to put the win 7 hd back into the lappy :P and see what happens because i do remember disabling the wireless card just before switching to the SSD drive and installing pclos. ;)

well i tried all day to get this to work and dont understand why it will work in other distros but not on my favorite :'(. mad wifi doesnt seem to do anything at all ??? (proably my own ineptness ::) as that is what worked on my first aspire one), ndiswrapper no go :-\ and many other things. the biggest problem i have ran into is getting the "command not found" ??? after trying to execute some of the requested commands in the shell during different turtorials. i believe the different distros must run different shell programs that have the commands under different names.. this will just have to run win7 for now :P although i didnt want to admit to my "windows is better" friends that im at a loss at the moment :-[ although i never quit. i know it works in pclos but at the moment it will have to wait. the unable to find network interface for selected device has haunted me all day. :o

could be because of a newer kernel in other distros ?

loudog,

Can you open a terminal and type lspci and extract the detail for the wireless card ten post it here .

The madwifi package and the native kernel ath5k and ath9k can clash unless you blacklist the native kernel drivers.

post the results of  cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Can you confirm which version of PCLinuxOS this is also?

today is a busy day at the motel :P so i will do what i can and post when i can ;). as for the other dist running a more recent kernel i hadent thought of that ::) although im running the latest bfs kernel from the repos (youcantoo's pclosusers) the iso loaded was the 2012.2 ant the updates were in the 70 mb range. i need to change the hd out of the lappy and put the ssd back in it as that is where the pclos install is at.
note: after doing exhaustive research :P on the ssd i did discover that diskdrake did not set up the ssd from the iso ??? as recomended on the forum. after looking at some of old polacks very imformative posts :) and others i did download the latest gparted iso and reformatted the ssd. it came out exactly as recomended 8). the only problem was enabling trim as none of the screenshots on the internet looked like what i got :-\ when doing the command that allows you to see what partitions, sizes, cylinders etc. so im not sure where to add the word discard ???. it appeared that i would edit the file and add discard just after "defaults 01). anyway with the ssd formatted properly the second boot and to desktop was very noticably faster. :o
ok so we need lspci, cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and i believe i covered the pclos kde  desktop as the os. will post back soon.

next, the cat /etc/modprobe.d.blacklist  returned this: blacklist ssb  ???
so i will be checking the kernel of the other distros. it appears the person who is having the sound problem has this same model netbook, i wonder if his wireless is working. maybe ill send him a personal message and see.  ;)

kernel 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs

You need a newer kernel, newer kernels are available but are still in a state of testing , and therefore not yet supported on the forum.

They will be in the regular repo "when they are ready"

you re welcome to move to testing (please sign up on the testing mail list) however it means you relinquishing "stable/supported" status , alternatively patience will be the best virtue to have.

+1,

note also that installing a test kernel will require you to install additional packages from testing sections, please do it if you feel enough comfortable dealing with the requirements, you may find further info by reading the threads on the testers ML.
