when I used the command X -configure in root, this was the output:

[root@localhost ~]# X -configure

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.

Hi,

I am going to boot the relevant machine and look what package nvidia-xconfig belongs to. You should be able to use it...

Hi,

To perform this you must be root in a virtual console, and quit X. So, logout, press keys Ctrl+Alt+F1, login as root with root as user and root password, then remove the file /tmp/.X0-lock, repeat the X -configure command, follow the instructions and if all good, restart gdm : gdm-start, and...
some useful commands:
gdm-start
gdm-stop
gdm-safe-restart

killall X
killall gdm

and if you are in trouble force reboot with the "reboot" command in your tty.

The command "/usr/bin/nvidia-xconfig" belongs to the packages
x11-driver-video-nvidia-current
x11-driver-video-nvidia173
x11-driver-video-nvidia96xx

therefore if in doubt, you might try to reinstall the 3 above.

Mel,

Stop guessing.

Tretarn,

Is this Laptop a i5 or i7 with "hybrid" graphics card ?

If so you will for the time being have to use the low-powered intel graphics until linuxfully supports theis horrendous type of dual graphics system.

If i remember correctly this is due to get support in a kernel later than our current and even in out testing kernels (although AS would need to confirm as he may have back ported support)

There is a fix called the "VGA switcharoo" (mentioned earlier in this thread) which afaik is not able to be implemented at this time.

please post back with confirmation.

in order to reset up a Xserver  the command is XFdrake --auto

I suspect that this will in time sort itself out as Linux gain increased support for hybrid models.

That's nearly correct, there is the need of a kernel newer than 3.x and support from "bumblebee", which is an alternate project to "VGA switcharoo" with similar targets.  It's support has been already requested:

Tretarn's GPU's machine is not a nvidia Optimus. It is a very classic Geforce which should run correctly with our current nvidia driver.

Ho ho !

So what strategy should Tretarn use until the components are available in the repos ?

What I'm reading at:  http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14 there's no official support for Nvidia Optimus yet for Linux!!
Don't know why (maybe patents from Intel).

Guess then to use a open source fix for that if a user have a Optimus GPU in his/her laptop or motherboard.

Yes this has an i7 proccessor.

Ok, so I'm a little confused at the moment. As linux does not support Nvidia fully yet I should use the intel integrated card for the time being.

To do that should I remove all nvidia packages? So there are no clashes between the two cards  because when I removed the Intel and noveau drivers/packages earlier, although there were some screen issues, playing videos full screen worked fine.

I would suggest doing what works for you at the moment - then as the support is gained for the hybrid chipset you will benefit further.

Its unfortunate that intel/nvidia clearly have not played ball with the Linux developers on this.
