Network centre problem? [SOLVED]
« on: April 11, 2012, 12:34:13 AM »
Hello,

Not sure why but recently I have started to have problems using the network centre (I use the KDE version of Pclinuxos). Initially, when my pc boots up I have the connection via ethernet disconnected. I use the network centre to connect. This works fine on the first go. For some reason when I use it now to disconnect it doesn't work. I have tried right-clicking on the icon on the task bar as well. This asks me to enter my root password which I do but it still does not disconnect. After I have done this I get a new icon displayed on the task bar. When I click on this it comes up with options about 'Keep Authorisation' or 'Forget Authorisation'.

A couple of questions. Why do you think the Network centre won't allow me to disconnect? Also, why does that new icon on the task bar appear?

I presume that something has got corrupted along the way? Do I just need to re-install the network centre or is there another problem?

Thanks

Cheers for now

Gary

Is this the method used for disconnecting oldgreygary

This is just for my curiousity - is there a specific reason you need to shut your network connection down each time?
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Can't duplicate here - just disconnected with no problems at all (and obviously  ;) ) reconnected.

Yes, I have a alternative hdd which I use for testing and remastering. A rather fresh install and it works like a charm. it is my main hdd (same machine, I use removable hdd's) that shows the trouble. A meanwhile "old" but always updated install. On that one the problem shows and I am unable to find the culprit so far.

"A couple of questions. Why do you think the Network centre won't allow me to disconnect? Also, why does that new icon on the task bar appear?"

On the first one I fail to answer so far as I struggle with the same little mistery. On the second question, it is normal to see that extra (yellow?) icon on the taskbar to show/warn you that you have something running as root. You see the same if you open i.e. PCC. It letterly learns:
You're currently authorized to configure system-wide settings (that affect all users) without typing the administrator password again. You can give up this authorization.

Have you added any of the new kernels that AS developed (can't recall if they are available in the testing section on the 32bit repo or not) as there were some net network related files which I believe should of been added/updated as well.

The Network Manager has recently been upgraded to work with the kernels in testing. Maybe there's a problem with it with the old kernels under some circumstances. It sounds like a permissions issue of some kind.

Are you sure it doesn't disconnect? Have you tried accessing the Internet after it reports failure to see whether you're really still connected?

I must admit, on my laptop, which I only connect when I need to, I no longer disconnect as I generally just shutdown and let that process deal with it.

Well, low and behold. The search feature brings me right to the problem I am having. I figured this was a crazy thing and no one else has this problem. I was wrong.

This has happened to me recently as well. I try to disconnect and it won't. Not only that, when this happens the tray icon which is a series of green bars changes to a green circle with a check mark in it. It won't allow me to get rid of it unless I shutdown.

Very strange. At least to me. I am not as concerned about the not shutting down as the change in icon. It's like something else has grabbed onto the network. I should also mention the most important thing. This is a computer I only use on a public wifi connection.

Any input on this would be great. Thanks.

when this happens the tray icon which is a series of green bars changes to a green circle with a check mark in it.

In my (limited) experience, the bars are used for a wireless connection (to indicate signal strength), and the check mark is the icon used for a wired connection (to indicate connected), since the bars would make no sense with a wired connection.

This happens when there is no wired connection. Just wireless. That is why I find it strange.

On my box NetApplet no longer shows disconnected, even if disconnected. ???

Can't remember when this started happening, but not a problem for me.

Has green tick displayed even after unplugging B/B dongle.
