Need help to install Virtual box bin file
« on: April 10, 2012, 01:17:07 AM »
Hi I am completely new to linux and had problems installing Windows XP from the older VirtualBox program in the repository. So I used getvirtual box in the repository and it came up with a message there is a newer version of VirtualBox please go to this address to download it. I downloaded and read some instructions on this forum as to how to install the program and even looked elsewhere but I still have problems I hope someone can help me with as it just will not install at all.
One other question does anyone know when the newer version will be in the repository? It is real easy to install from there but Bin files give me a headache. Thanks for your help.

How ever you will get messages about updates, your first choice is to open Synaptic, click on reload (to get new package list), click on Mark All Upgrades. ... More Infos with images http://pclinuxoshelp.com/index.php/Synaptic_and_the_Repositories  :)

All upgrades done, next step click on start menu > More Applications > Emulators > Get Oracle VM VirtualBox

This will install latest VM for you, don' t forget to reboot after installation to add it in your kernel.

ps. Welcome to our madhouse calling PCLinuxOS  ;D

To build on what Leiche said:

1)Open Synaptic.

2)Click on "Reload"

3)Click "Mark all updates" Then "apply."

After that, re-run the getvirtualbox script.

Hi thanks for your help when I took the old VirtualBox off and installed get VirtualBox I was pleasantly surprised to see the very newest version. I am on the Do It Yourself Forum and a fellow there who got me interested in Linux said all you have to do is ask for an update to the repository and it usually is done fairly quickly. So thanks I really appreciate it :). Unfortunately I still have some problems with the mouse sticking and a warning about the guest os not accepting the virtual mouse. I know I have seen advice on that here and will look the forum over before posting something new.

You should grab the VirtualBox Extension Pack and install it ... File > Preferences > Extensions.

You might also want to install GuestAddition appropriate for your version of VirtualBox.

There is a setting in VB to disable notifications of updates.

Pinoc I think does the getVB install, top man.

The extentions pack is installed as well, no need to do that.

(ps the Bridging NAT gets its IP addy from the router via DHCP, so you can access the box......been playing with it for a week, very impressed)
