Hello,

In this link there are some alternatives:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,81206.0.html

At the end, which resulted the best for project management?
Are there any other alternatives now in 2012?

Regards

At the time it was openproj, and for me it still is. I haven't looked at the alternatives since I started to use it (I a needed to be able to share with MS Project).

I'm sure you will get different opinions from other community members though  :D

Maybe this is completely off-topic, but for my day-to-day planning and project managing activities I use a GTD tool:
http://mgsd.tiddlyspot.com/#mGSD
You can just use it directly in your browser or even share it with others via dropbox or a server.

But it doesn't come with Gantt charts and those tools you would need for project planning and similar things.

Thanks 7272andy, but OpenProj has not being updated since 2008 by the user reviews here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openproj/
and I need a modern tool that can interface with "The Brain" mind mapping software. Since I installed this I am using PCLinuxOS more than Windows :D  and I am better organized, unfortunately it lacks project capabilities.

Thanks nixus, I  selected The Brain because it was recommended by David Allen in his website, although for me, xMind is more intuitive and easy to use. Now that I forced myself to learn The Brain I am happy with it. I am trying to implement GTD methodology, but I would like the integration among mind mapping, Goals, Planning, Projects, tasks, GANTT, PERT, to-do, agenda, contacts, notes and journal. Might be I am asking too much for a single tool.

My other problem is selecting a GTD tool to interact with The Brain, nixus have you seen and tested some of these GTD tools? If yes, would you share your results and conclusions?
http://www.priacta.com/Articles/Comparison_of_GTD_Software.php

Thanks a lot

Huh... intriguing.

I went out to the website for "The Brain" and found what could be a very interesting mindmapping tool.

What I have not found thus far is a way to determine its interoperability with other programs.

If I knew more about that it might help.  In the meanwhile, for Gantt charts, look at http://ganttproject.biz

It's Microsoft Project compatible, and free.

Hope this helps you out.

2-Plan

http://2-plan.com/

2-plan Desktop

As a free project management software, 2-plan Desktop combines the advantages of traditional and agile project management methods into one effective tool to setup, plan, and monitor your projects. The first to offer free and easy to use Graphical Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), 2-plan Desktop uses a top down planning approach so you can layout the high-level scope of your project and then work downwards to add additional details as they become available. Easily schedule your project by creating work packages, defining dependencies, and allocating resources. Use click-and-drag functionality directly within the Gantt Chart to make quick changes. Customize the layout of your screen so the features you use most are right where you need them. Drag-and-drop mind map objects into project objects, and more!

According to 2-plan's EULA, it doesn't look like we can include it in the PCLinuxOS repository:

Quote
6. Copyright

A. All title and copyrights in and to the Software (including but not limited to any images, photographs, animations, video, audio, music and text incorporated into the Software), the accompanying printed materials, and any copies of the Software, are owned by Licensor or its suppliers. This EULA grants you no rights to use such content. If this Software contains documentation that is provided only in electronic form, you may print one copy of such electronic documentation. Except for any copies of this EULA, you may not copy the printed materials accompanying the Software.

B. You may not reverse engineer, de-compile, disassemble, alter, duplicate, modify, rent, lease, loan, sublicense, make copies of, create derivative works from, distribute or provide others with the Software in whole or part, transmit or communicate the application over a network.

That's really a shame.

I left that work some months ago but I still use OpenProj, is enough for my needs.

I agree about xMind, I have not used The Brain and now I'm really intrigued, I think is a great tool for certain task I have to start next Monday so I will download it.

Thank you.

Though 2-Plan may not be able to be included in the repos
individuals still can use it on a personal basis if they want. So if it fits
people's individuals needs they can download, install, and use it.

I just learned about it yesterday, and have never used it, but maybe
if enough people push them they may release it under a distributable
license.

Except for the fact that users are discouraged from installing from outside the repos. If they do, they are on their own when it comes time for support here in these forums, since no one here will know what changes have been made to their installation.

Like I said, it's really a shame.

Just looked at 2 plan and noticed that

http://2-plan.com/help/faq.html#b

"Is the 2-plan Desktop application open source?

No. 2-plan Desktop is not available as open source. However, 2-plan Team is open source."

The new released Calligra suite (for KDE primarily) has a project management application included... but that suite is not (yet) available in Synaptic afaik...  - however, it could be an alternative solution in the future too....

And when searching on the internet, I think there are also pure online tools for Project management;
so choose what you prefer  ;)

rubentje1991 I installed all the K office and looks very good ( I liked it, I don't know why reminds me Perfect Office  ??? ) with some shortcomings that makes me refrain from adopt it, I hope Calligra will be better.

Hello,
I wonder how can we protect our PCLinuxOS installation? because I already installed java applications directly from the executables, like MindOnTrack, and The Brain, I was thinking in installing also 2-Plan, it looks very nice, I do not mind to pay for some modules if they are good, developers have to live and they have families to care for.

Thanks
