LO Manager 3.5.2 Install Message: SOLVED
« on: April 05, 2012, 08:53:50 PM »
Perhaps this should be in another section of the forum but it's affecting my use of Libre Office on LXDE so I'm starting here. If I'm in the wrong forum, please move.

I've done a fresh install of LXDE as I had been trying Phoenix, unsucessfully, so am back to what I feel works on my elderly notebook. I use Libre Office quite extensively so went to put it in after installing all of the Synaptic updates. LO Manager is telling me (and I couldn't copy/paste this):

"LO Manager 3.5.2
Old startup script detected and deleted.
Please run LO Manager again.
If you get this message again:
     a) as root: remove the file /tmp/xsulomanager
     b) as normal user: run LO Manager"

That's nice. Where do I find "/tmp/xsulomanager" so I can deleted it? Do I access it from LXTerminal? If not, how do I get to it to delete it? I assume that LO Manager 3.5.2 will replace it, if necessary, with something that makes it happy.

This was a real surprise to me as when I last installed LXDE, LibreOffice went in without hesitation. I gather something drastic has been changed in the past two-three months...

Thank you for your attention and advice.

A 2nd update of the lomanager has been posted and fixes this problem. Do the update and the
error should be erased no matter what version of the 2012 PCLinuxOS you run.

Thank you, smileeb, however I still get the message quoted in my original posting. Synaptic shows that 3.5.2 is installed (and I reinstalled it just to make sure...). However, the grey box with the message persists. There are no updates pending in my install of LXDE. The update icon has a green check-mark in it and says "0 updates available; 0 new packages available". Am I ahead of the updates? I'm told that the next update will be April 7 at 10 AM (but it doesn't state what time zone...). Should I wait until Saturday April 7, 10 AM Canadian time in Western Canada?

Alternatively, it seems that I have to remove "/tmp/xsulomanager" from someplace. Where? How do I get to it to remove it?

Puzzled and confused,
Far North

Far North,
Not enough info. Do you have 3.5.2-1 installed? Or do you have 3.5.2-2 installed?

Far North,

there is nothing wrong here. You will get this message when you previously cancelled the gksu-window or there was some other error. The message says that this file, which should not be there, was found and deleted (so lomanager already fixed that for you) and then the message tells you Please run lomanager again. Did you do that? No? Why not?
It may also be that this file still exist because lomanager was run as root (which is not needed but some guys still do that), and then cancelled and for that reason the file /tmp/xsulomanager has root permissions and can not be deleted by test inside the script. For this nice case the error message tells you to delete that file as root. And then run lomanager again as normal user.
I thought writing that in the popup message was pretty clear, apparently it isn't...

, maybe in the directory /tmp/ ??? but you may not find such a file there because lomanager already did that for you: Old startup script detected and deleted.
Then the lomanager window told you to run lomanager again as normal user, just do that please.

Neal ManBear: 3.5.2-2 is what the screen tells me. I didn't catch what it said the very first time. I was just trying to install LibreOffice from the screen icon. The delete message surprised me.

Pinoc: Everytime I select any of the LOManager choices-- screen, menu -- it always asks for me to log on as 'root' via a sign-on box onscreen. If I ignore it, I end up back at the desktop screen.

Your suggestions are much appreciated. I'm following them but, at this time, seem to be hitting a brick wall, nose first... Perhaps I should try a new install again. The hard drive on my system was clean before -- reset using GParted to totally blank -- though that was probably unnecessary.

Your assistance and suggestions/questions are much appreciated. Thank you.

Hopefully, the "light" will come on between my ears so I can see what I may be missing/doing wrong and get LXDE running again. I'm now sorry I tried to change desktop systems...

The installation of any new application/program/software, for example LibreOffice, will be done as root, that is why it asks you for the root-password. If you do not provide the root-password when asked then lomanager will stop because you stopped the installation. As a side effect the file /tmp/xsulomanager will remain in the system which on a subsequent lomanager run will be detected and deleted. That is what happened in your case. If you want to install LibreOffice then read and follow the instructions given by lomanager.

Far North,
Pinoc was commenting that many users run lomanager as root meaning they first login as root, then run lomanager. Normal operation is to run lomanager as user, then give your root password as prompted by lomanager.  :)

My original question still remains unanswered; where do I find / how do I get to "/tmp/xsulomanager" so I can delete it? Simple directions outlining the step(s) I need to take to erase this file from wherever it is situated on my hard drive is all I asked for. The information provided in all of the postings to this thread are interesting but I'm no further ahead.

Ladies and Gentlemen: the steps please to find and delete /tmp/xsulomanager please.

Far North,

each operating system provided so-called file managers (e.g. Konqueror) allowing you to browse directories, for example the directory /tmp ...

Probably the easiest for you to delete the file of question will be to open a terminal: PCmenu -> More Applications -> Terminals -> Konsole and enter:
Code: [Select]
/usb/bin/su -c 'rm -f /tmp/xsulomanager'

The answer to your query is as follow:

Code: [Select]
[user@localhost ~] $ su
Password:
[root@locahost~] $ rm -f /tmp/xsulomanager
[root@locahost~] $ exit

Although as pinoc had already explained, the file may no longer exist as it had already been deleted.

Pinoc, you wrote:

The problem with that is that some file managers by default show the addresses in "navigation" mode. How is a new user to know that the text Root > tmp on the location bar in Dolphin actually means the same thing as the more traditional /tmp?

Filemanager in LXDE is: PC Man FM

=> start up the default file manager, use brain and insert the directory in question which is /tmp, is that that difficult???

Well, this was an adventure and seemingly became very technical. What I finally did was sign on as ROOT and installed LO. It went in with no problem and works from my main user sign in, too. LO seems happy and I can now process more verbiage as needed.

I guess if I had originally gone to ROOT, it would have same us all a lot of time and processing of words on this forum...

I appreciate very much all of your assistance. Thank you. (I have marked this thread as "SOLVED" as it has been for me.)
