[SOLVED] My Home is Full
« on: April 05, 2012, 05:11:26 PM »
I didn't know where to put this topic.

Today I decided to do some /home house cleaning in order to prepare to save folders to my external drive.

I knew I had a lot in my Trash and did delete much of the stuff there.  I did not delete in one big delete as I often like to relook before deleting.  I left a bunch of folders there for a later look.

I then went to /home and started to move a file and got a notice that /home was full.
I save things but I don't think I save that much and I even put folders that are not active in a Storage partition.

Here is what I saw. When I first tried to save the picture, it said the disk was full, so I saved in the Storage partition.

I rebooted thinking something was amiss.
This time when I saved the picture I could save in /home.
Here is what I saw. But there is not much difference.

After rebooting a notice came up from DropBox saying DB cannot sync unless you free some diskspace on your computer.

I just got rid of tons from the Trash.  Is there something else I can check....before you tell me to  get rid of some of my junk?  I don't want to just start moving things until I am sure of what I am doing.

No, I am not very good at that.  Have received different advice on using that.  But will bring it up and do a few of them.

Below my "safe" settings, yours may differ because of different installed programs, in case of doubts don't check the corresponding box.  ;) Check all boxes related to "cache" as they are all temporary files ...

I did not just check check check.
I did each individually to see what sizes were and also to make sure that was what I wanted to delete.

I had done System Temp (before seeing your model)  84.3 MB
The rotated logs were denied to me.

Thumbnails  cache 859.4MB

Did not do rest of Trash (432.7)

Several others had  several MB or more which I deleted.  So I did recover some.

I did the  du -sch ~/* and I guess the figures don't lie.  Is there a way to put these in order of size?
My hogs were Audacity, Blender, Inkscape, Music, Pictures, PowerPoints, Scribus and Gimp

I guess the next step is to move some of those things over to the Storage partition.

OR do some more cleaning.

OR reinstall and make a bigger /home.  :'( :'( :'( :'(

You can safely delete this and all others "cache" ...

"OR reinstall and make a bigger /home."

Maybe you have space on your drive to simply re-size /home?  (Grow it bigger)

I am just deleting like crazy.  ;D    But those little 78kb don't make much of a dent.  :P
I moved a couple to Storage.

I did the sort and showing the top amounts.  I never noticed that last one with 25G ?????

34M     /home/meme/Scribus
68M     /home/meme/Gimp
69M     /home/meme/Dropbox
81M     /home/meme/Blender
116M    /home/meme/Inkscape
170M    /home/meme/audacity1.3-meme
317M    /home/meme/Pictures
404M    /home/meme/Music
25G     /home/meme/tmp
[meme@localhost ~]$

Yes, I have plenty of room to expand.

But don't know if I have the strength to do it.  :(

How do I do that?   I did something to KDE temp files with BleachBit.

Try with Bleachbit first: System -> Temporary files ...
