I did not configured the network!

I have the network name and the password,I can use the network on my laptop which runs on Ubuntu, but on my desktop Ubuntu can not find the network.

On the other hand PCLinuxOS on the desktop can find the network but can not connect to it!

thanks for your time

do I have to configure the network on the desktop?!

if yes, where can I start,as I am new to configuration?!

Do you have more information?

How many devices involved (laptop, dekstop, etc)?
How does each device connect (wireless, wired, etc)?
For devices (or OSes) which do connect, what network config exists (IP address, gateway, subnet, etc)?
For devices (or OSes) which do not connect, are there any settings (IP, gateway, etc)?

We cannot see your PCs, nor do we know how you have things setup.  You need to be explicit and verbose in order for anyone to give a reasonably intelligent response...
???

Hi,thanks for your reply!

I try to answer your questions one by one!But I have to say this again, that I am a new user and do not know much about configurations!!

Do you have more information?
I am not sure what information do you need.

How many devices involved (laptop,desktop.etc)?
well,I want to connect a desktop to the wireless network using (Netgear MA101),I already connected a laptop to the  wireless network with no problem!

How does each devise connected (wireless, wired, etc)?
the desktop is not connected to any wired or wireless network,I would like to connect it to the wireless network.
the laptop is successfully  connected to the wireless network and I using it to communicate with PCLinuxOS Forum.

For devices (or OSes) which do connect, what network config exists (IP address, gateway, subnet, ect)?
well,to be honest, I don't understood this question!! but I can explain,On my laptop, when I turn on the laptop I go to the network icon and see the wireless networks name,I click on it and enter the password and I connect to it, it does not ask me about any (IP address or anything else) but on the desktop I can see the wireless network but can not connect to it. and thats my problem,as I would like to connect to the wireless network using my desktop computer.I did not config anything on the laptop.

For devices (or OSes) which do not connect, are there any setting (IP,gateway, etc)?
No there is not any setting!this is what I did,I installed PC Linux OS on the desktop and tried to connect to the wireless network as I did with the laptop, on the desktop, I see the wireless network but can not connect to it.

thank you very much for your time.

OK...let's look at it this way:

You have two devices, a desktop, and a laptop.  The laptop is connected, and the desktop is not.

For the laptop:
* What OS is it running?
* Does it have any other OSes installed (do you dual-boot Windows, etc)?

For the desktop:
* What OS is it running?
* Does it have any other OSes installed (do you dual-boot Windows, etc)?

When we have these questions answered, we can followup with how to get the other information.

from a console on the laptop, run the following command and post the results:
Code: [Select]
ifconfig
This will tell us what IP range you're wireless is using.
Code: [Select]
route -n
This will give us soem information on a working network configuration.

Are you trying to connect the desktop wired, or wireless?  If wireless, what adapter are you using (make, model, rev.# if possible)?

Yes, you need to configure the network.

You haven't said, specifically, what you've tried, or what errors or messages you might have encountered...

Run
Code: [Select]
pcc
Enter root's password...

Click on "Network & Internet" on the left.

Click "Set up a new network interface (LAN, ISDN, ADSL, ...)" on the right.

Select "Wireless (W-Fi)", and click next.

Select your wireless adapter (should default to it), and click next.

Select your network, click next.

(At this point, I can't walk through the steps in detail at the moment)...if I recall, you should get a settings window where you can enter any password required, set it to use DHCP (get an IP automatically), etc; then you choose to start the network at boot time, and then start the network...

Walk through this, and report anything back that occurs.

Also, since you're running this from a command prompt, after you're done (successfully or not), report any messages that are displayed after you've typed "pcc"...

Hi

thanks for replying

I walked through you instructions, (which was easy to follow, thanks) but in the end I got this message,

"problems occurred during the network connectivity test.

This can be caused by invalid network configuration, or problems with your modem or router.

you might want to relaunch the configuration to verify the connection settings."

I tried again and got the same message!

I did not get any message after typing "pcc"

thanks

...

Not sure, at this point...can you review the network settings (ESSID, encryption type (WEP/WPA/WPA2/etc.), password/passphrase, etc.) on you're working computer, and make sure that is what you're trying to use on this PC?

Sorry I don't have another suggestion, at the moment...
