Conflicting sound cards/ HDMI
« on: April 03, 2012, 11:11:57 PM »
I just installed from the 2012.2 Kde live cd with all the latest updates from heatnet as 03 Apr 2012, The laptop is a HP Pavilion g6 with i believe two sound cards one is a AMD Hudson Azalia and the second is a ATI Technologies device 1714 according to PCC. One card is a HDMI. There is sound on start up and shutdown, the sound is good when playing a music cd, but no sound in the web browsers (firefox and opera) when you play a you tube video.

The Kmix icon on the lower panel won't allow you to change the volume.
I did open kmix mixer and all of the volume controls are at full volume.

I ran alsaconf as root without success.

The current sound driver is Intel HDA driver (snd_hda_intel [ALSA].

I searched the forum and tried the posts below without success.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is my experience that different sound sinks attached to a PC can cause different applications to use  either sound sink ......  so some apps will give sound through the speakers while others might seem to be non-working, but most likely the sound is being sent to an unused sound sink, like the HDMI channel.

The solution I suggest (though most likely not the only one available) is to install Pulse Audio, enable it in PCC - Hardware - Sound  and reboot the PC.
Then set up the sound system as you wish to use it, through Pulse Audio Volume Control.

To install Pulse Audio, select in Synaptic ......  task-pulseaudio and pavucontrol

PA Volume Control (pavucontrol) gives the user most all the controls s/he needs, on its various tabs.

For instance, I have the HDMI sound sink turned off in the Configuration Tab, so it can not be used by the sound system.
If I ever have need to use it, a simple click with the mouse turns it on again.

With more than one sound sink, each app can be told to use one and that setting will be remembered the next time the app is launched.

One of the sound sinks can be set as the default, so in the absence of an alternative, like USB connected speaker or headset, any app that previously had been using the alternative will use the default.

I like point and click and GUI .......  which is why I like PA Vol Ctrl   :D

IMO, it is by far the easiest means of controlling both sound sources and sound sinks where the PC has more than one of either.

In your experience, would there be a difference between 32 bit and 64 bit
or
do you have a preference ?

Thanks

The device the sound is sent to ....  such as speakers connected to an audio card, USB connected speakers, Headphones, wireless Headset, Bluetooth connected earpiece etc etc

I am not certain what is behind the question .......  32 or 64 bit ......  unless asking about the PCLOS 64 bit test ISO.

If that is what you meant then from my experience Pulse Audio is not fully functional on the 64 bit test ISO .....  the Pulse Audio Control package does not work on the two different installs I did here. So none of the easy conrtol over source & sink is present  :(

But such things are to be expected from test ISOs.

One must assume that any questions on the forum relate to the 32 bit supported official release  ;)

EDIT:
I have since done another install of the 64 bit and have PulseAudio Volume Control working on that one.

OK, that's what I wanted to know.

Thanks a lot

I have tried both suggestions without success, and thank you for the suggestions. I am hoping that with the newest kernel that is being sent to the repo will fix the problem.
