Hi,  I have just installed PClinuxOS 2012 KDE and have a problem connecting to mobile broadband. I normally have no problems connecting on another distro + mint + knoppix, sabayon and bodhi. It is not connecting on PclinuxOS
I hope you can help me .

I looked through 5 pages in this section and also googled but couldnt find an answer.

I have included a lot of information below which I hope is useful

Using Pclinux 2012 KDE
Kernel: 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs
Broadband dongle: Sierra wireless USB302 on O2 Ireland (contract)
I went into the EDGE/GPRS/3G connection and entered the same settings I use for other distros.. i.e. the ones that come up automatically for O2,and my sim pin

Please, check this thread, not exactly the same device, but very similar:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,103124.0.html

very probably you will need to download, compile and install the updated package linked in the first post, alternatively you may want to try to install the new kernel 3.2.13 available in testing section, which include updated support for sierra devices.

I tried installing the drivers and connecting but it didnt work. As the 14 pages on the other thread got very messy, I suppose I will just wait for the release you mentioned.

I also tried connecting with my Nokia c5-03 which I also use in other distros, but no luck here either.

Thanks anyway

The 3.2.13 kernel is already available for you to try ......  it is in testing section of the repository. I am presently using it as my main kernel without issue.

Thanks, as I cannot acces the repos due to having no internet connection, is there another way of downloading and installing 3.2.13?

The testing section is here

http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.testing/

I installed the following

kernel-3.2.13-pclos5.pae.bfs (1-1_as_2012)
kernel-devel-3.2.13-pclos5.pae.bfs (1-1_as_2012)

So if you choose a different kernel, make sure you have the corresponding 'devel' package.

kernel-3.2.14  is now available in 5 different 'flavours' ;)  Install the one that suits your hardware and requirements.

Ok, I'll give it a go. Havent done it before. Are there any other packages not in the default insatall of 2012 I need to also download and install before I reboot into Pclinuxos?
And if you have a link to a tutorial, it would be great.
Thanks

There should be directions about dropping the packages into /var/cache/apt/archives/  and then using Synaptic to install them.

Maybe someone with definite instructions could jump in here ......  as I have not used this method for kernels and there *might* be something I am not allowing for ......  so hang fire a little while please ....

Shouldn't the development package be drawn in as a dependency of the new kernel package being installed???

Yes and the dependencies are in place. You won't be able to install the kernel package alone, without the devel package. There are however other dependencies that right now are not enforced (there is a reason because it is in testing ....) and mostly are about dkms video driver modules. Installing the new kernel will require to update some packages also available in testing section, i.e. fglrx driver, nvidia173xx, broadcom-wl, ... which have been patched/updated to properly build and work with the new kernel.

phd7,
unless you know exactly what you are going to do, don't do that, if you decide to test the new kernel, please join the tester-ML the testing section:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/board,83.0.html

OK, so how are they getting the kernel without an internet connection? or am I missing something here?

Using a different OS that can use the mobile broadband device the packages can be downloaded.

But as AS has pointed out this is not as simple as at first appears ....

I took the easy way out and bought a Huawei modem (E353)for O2  which was recognised straight away.

Thanks for the input anyway
