Yes, it is not installed, but it is available in repos  ;)

Yup, I was aware of that AS, I was just reporting that it wasn't installed/in use on my systems (I'd deliberately held off installing it as GE has been fine on my systems and behaving well so I saw no need for it)

I followed advice above, but have no progress.

However, I will try to get my head out of my ass and try it again tomorrow.

I also am getting crashes now like:
KDE crash handler.
executable kdeinit4
PID: 2832 ( and 2826 and 2869  )
Signal segmentation fault.

Don't have a clue if it's related or not.I just mention it.

See you tomorrow.

Don't work, sorry...
I attempt to try your instructions (the menotou instructions, that AS show me, but i have the "libGL.so.1" and the "lib.GL.so.1.2", so there was some errors and GoogleEarth don't start at all (not launched by Terminal [there is a very long error-message that claim the libraries aren't on System] and not from icon [nothing happens]).
I try to turn back at all, but this don't work too. I have, now, an error message that tell me:

"./googleearth-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"

It's maybe better that I try to uninstall GoogleEarth and -after- reinstall it?

before you reinstall GE: you say that you have the libGL.so.1 in your system but GE does not find it. What is the full path to your libGL.so.1?

If you have nvidia or fglrx drivers installed then try

[root@localhost ~]# mv /usr/lib/libGL.so* /opt
[root@localhost ~]# ldconfig

for 32 bit.

[root@localhost ~]# mv /usr/lib64/libGL.so* /opt
[root@localhost ~]# ldconfig

for 64bit.

I know this working for XBMC.

I don't know this can be done ??? ( a suggestion in the wild!).

I apologize, but I have uninstalled and -after- installed new my GoogleEarth (on my ZEN-mini 64-bit Edition).
This is the output of my "locate libGL.so.1" on Terminal:

/usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2
/usr/lib64/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib64/libGL.so.1.2
/usr/lib64/fglrx/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib64/fglrx/libGL.so.1.2
/usr/lib64/mesa/libGL.so.1
/usr/lib64/mesa/libGL.so.1.2

... but, I am seeing -in this moment- into my folder:

/opt/google/earth/free/

and i can see an other file named

libGL.so.1

and a file (other) named

libGLU.so.1

I don't know if this can help to understand the problem, but this I can see on my desktop.

I had attempt to install the nvidia drivers too (because theu are by default in all my PCLinuxOS installations, but not in my ZEN-mini installation), but nothing haèppens and nothing change.

If I attempt to open GoogleEarth a window ask me to use DirectX and after my choice (No, because I'm in PClinuxOS and not in Windows!), GoogleEarth, suddenly, crash.
Sometime (but rarely) it not crash and GoogleEarth work right.
But it's a very rare behaviur... otherwise, it crash and disappear.

Guess there is the need to clarify about:

Google earth is actually using an unfortunate naming for GL rendering, it call it DirectX which indeed is a windows denomination, but it really refer to GL features. Answering no at that question, means that google-earth will use the default X rendering, which is done in software, and therefore slower than GL graphics which is done directly from the graphics adapter, where supported.

Additionally, even if your graphics adapter doesn't support GL featutures, google-earth (or any other application) may use mesaGL library which provide a software emulation of GL rendering.

Confused ?

GE -> /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 (mesa-GL) -> software GL emulation -> X rendering -> generic graphics card
GE -> /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.1 -> nvidia GL interface -> GL rendering -> nvidia graphics card
GE -> /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so.1 -> Ati-Amd GL interface -> GL rendering -> ATI graphics card

When answering no to use "DirectX":
GE -> X rendering -> graphics card

In your case monsee if you answer no to "use DirectX" GE will never use libGL.so.1, whatever is your graphics card.

I would suggest to clean out the content of ~/.googleearth/Cache and retry using DirectX Yes, because your card should support GL rendering.

... forgot in previous post:

to add a bit of complexity, on a 64 bit installation there exists 32 bit libs and 64 bit libs ... and the libraries might be used or not depending on /etc/ld.so.conf* configuration ... which are details we are trying to clarify ...

OK, here's what I will do.
Right now I have 3 lesson hours.
After that I will play with above again
If no good, I will try to install pclos (on this lappie) again, <which is problematic to begin with.>
IF also no good AND "My Dear" want to play with GE, THEN it will be LinuxMint ( as it works fine there . )

I hope next ISO with 3.x.x kernel solves the problems I am having on this Lenovo.
Please note, on my desktop it's all smooth sailing.
