New Very Satisfied User
« on: April 02, 2012, 04:06:12 PM »
Hi all. This is my first post in the forum. I a new user of PCLOS LXDE, however I started using Linux/Debian for a while now. I have used The Gnome and LXDE versions of LinuxMint before. Still I like the rolling update in PCLOS so I decided to give it a shot, and maybe I start using it as my main distro.

Actually I was trying to ask a question about installing skippy (lightweight expo or scale effect) on PCLinuxOS LXDE, but I noticed that it is in the repo! I had to compile it on Ubuntu based systems! Thanks developers, and keep the good work.

Skippy WAS on PCLinuxOS 2007 Repositories, but it isn't more. http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/6731354/com/skippy-0.5.0-1pclos2007.i586.rpm.html
... It isn't more for some reasons, I think (but I don't know tha reasons).

It most certainly is, in the main repository section.

I would guess that the question should have been, "Is it up-to-date?"

Up to date is relative. "Does it install?" and "Does it work?" would be more apt. The software itself has not been updated since 2004 according to its homepage, but if it still works as designed, maybe no upgrading is necessary. The version in the repo is the newest available.

Exactly. It works fine. I think it does not need to be updated. :)

Well, I installed just to try it and it doesn't work here in KDE, fully updated install.

There is no access in the start menu. If I go to console shows this:

Quote
[crow@localhost ~]$ skippy
WARNING: Couldn't load config file '/home/crow/.skippyrc'.
X Error of failed request:  BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)
  Major opcode of failed request:  33 (X_GrabKey)
  Serial number of failed request:  79
  Current serial number in output stream:  79
[crow@localhost ~]$

".skippyrc" doesn't exist.

I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

While it can be used with KDE, it is primarily for light weight WMs and DEs, and needs some configuration modifications for use with KDE. Specifically, it tries to grab the F11 key for it to function properly, and KDE already claims that key for other purposes. Try the following links, and some of the links on those pages for additional information.

Yes, broken package, very probably wrong or outdated source code.

Installed on newest Phoenix got error;

[polack@localhost ~]$ skippy
WARNING: Couldn't load config file '/home/polack/.skippyrc'.

Obvious, because the file doesn't exist. Ran the following;

[polack@localhost ~]$ rpm -ql skippy
/usr/bin/skippy
/usr/share/doc/skippy-0.5.0
/usr/share/doc/skippy-0.5.0/CHANGELOG
/usr/share/doc/skippy-0.5.0/COPYING
/usr/share/doc/skippy-0.5.0/skippyrc-default

This, being rather sparse, offered only one clue, so ran;

[polack@localhost ~]$ cat /usr/share/doc/skippy-0.5.0/skippyrc-default
Code: [Select]
# Copy this to ~/.skippyrc and edit it to your liking
#
# Notes:
#
# - keysym can be anything XStringToKeysym can handle
#   (like F11, KP_Enter or implementation specific keysyms)
#
# - colors can be anything XAllocNamedColor can handle
#   (like "black" or "#000000")
#
# - distance is a relative number, and is scaled according to the scale
#   factor applied to windows
#
# - fonts are Xft font descriptions
#
# - booleans are "true" or anything but "true" (-> false)
#
# - opacity is an integer in the range of 0-255
#
# - brighness is a floating point number (with 0.0 as neutral)
#

[general]
keysym = F11
distance = 50
useNETWMFullscreen = true
ignoreSkipTaskbar = false

[xinerama]
showAll = false

[normal]
brightness = 0.0
tint = white
opacity = 200
border = black

[highlight]
brightness = 0.05
tint = #d0d0ff
opacity = 255
border = #d0d0ff

[tooltip]
show = true
border = black
background = #e0e0ff
text = black
font = fixed-11:weight=bold

The first line makes the next step obvious. This could be done automatically when installing the package.

[polack@localhost ~]$ cp /usr/share/doc/skippy-0.5.0/skippyrc-default ~/.skippyrc

[polack@localhost ~]$ skippy

Opened two more windows, pressed F11, and see this;

Clicking whichever window i choose brings it to the forefront; in this case it's Searchmonkey.

...or Dictionary, if I prefer.

The application works as described. The package is not broken, but it could use a bit of post install file copying, with the addition of a little scripting. Having a menu entry would also be nice.

Oh yeah, the Dictionary works fine too. ;D
