sound problem skype
« on: April 02, 2012, 10:55:05 AM »
Dear Readers.

My system crashed and I was forced to reinstall
PCLinuxOS-kde version.

[root@localhost ~]# uname -r
2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs
[root@localhost ~]#

[root@localhost ~]# lsmod | grep snd
snd_usb_audio          70631  0
snd_usbmidi_lib        15440  1 snd_usb_audio
snd_rawmidi            15287  1 snd_usbmidi_lib
snd_hda_codec_realtek   226487  1
snd_hda_intel          19109  2
snd_hda_codec          66310  2 snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel
snd_hwdep               4820  2 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_codec
snd_seq_dummy           1135  0
snd_seq_oss            25264  0
snd_seq_midi_event      4648  1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq                42136  5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device          4457  4 snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_pcm_oss            33854  0
snd_pcm                60446  4 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss

soundcore               5025  1 snd
snd_page_alloc          5877  2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
usbcore               117639  8 snd_usb_audio,snd_usbmidi_lib,uvcvideo,uhci_hcd,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd,usbhid
[root@localhost ~]#

I read once before the System Crash An instruction which say:

Write in /etc/modprobe.d

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel         In fact: snd-card-0 (snd-hda-intel [ALSA])
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel      In fact: sound-slot-0 (snd-hda-intel [ALSA])
alias snd-card-1 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-1 snd-hda-intel

 ???
The problem with editing /etc/modprobe.d is a directory
How to do that? Using Nano ? What must the file name be?

I cannot use Skype if not the sound problems are solved. MARK !! It occurs with Skype.

Alsamixer shows:
Card: HDA-NVidia   (that is not snd-hda-intel)
Chip: Realtek ALC887-VD

Motherboard msi GF615M-P33
     CPU0: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor
         (four core processor)
Audio: chip Integrated by Realtek ALC887

I must inform that I have tried already to edit /etc/modprobe.conf

The result is nil.

I have now installed OpenSuse.

By using OpenSuse's tool Zypper I manged to install Skype.  ;D

In OpenSuse I also could Use DVB stick dib0700 which are not possible
to use in PCLOS.

The bad thing with OpenSuse. I can Use the DVB stick for recording channels,
But I cannot see the records, I must copy to PCLOS for Wieuving.

It is also better menues in PCLOS.

I am waiting for an usable distro.

Erik

It appears you have two sound cards which most likely are competing with each other.
One *may* be the sound on a HDMI video connection. I do not know your hardware.

For managing sound on multiple devices I use Pulse Audio.

It can be installed through Synaptic by installing the following packages

task-pulseaudio
pavucontrol

Immediately after installation you need to enable it through PCLOS Control Centre - Hardware - Sound, and once that is done, immediately reboot.

You should then be able to determine which device an application uses.

There are a number of threads on this forum about Pulse Audio.

I have multiple audio devices attached to this PC and have no trouble at all connecting Skype or other applications to the device I wish.

Not sufficient information to even guess.

Did you reboot after installing?
Did you get an error message?
If yes .....  what was it?
