Remove Pidgin From Taskbar SOLVED
« on: April 01, 2012, 07:24:15 AM »
Is there a way to NOT have the icon for pidgin show up on the taskbar?  I know Pidgin is there always on my desktop and starts up with PCLinux for me.  I don't want to waste the space on the taskbar.  When I set up Gkrellm, it showed the icon there, but I was able to in the settings get rid of that icon.  I don't see that option with Pidgin.

If you meant the  System Tray ......  then the previous post has pointed you the way ........  but if you meant the Task Bar as written above then the only method I know at this time is (in KDE4) to set Smooth Tasks to only show apps that have been minimised on the Task bar.

I know of nothing in Pidgin that does it.

On the other hand I do not leave Pidgin open on the Desktop unless in use .......  I receive notifications if a message arrives etc. so it never bothered me and so have not looked specifically.

Taskbar? Hmmmpf... That would be weird... You would not have conversations in the taskbar so you would have to switch between them using... alt+tab?

Just18 some folks confuse taskbar with system tray as it's all on 1 panel ;)...

Yes, Andy, it is the taskbar, not system tray, I was talking about.  Like you, I saw where I could choose not to have it in system tray - but that wasn't my concern here.  I just like to have pidgin open on desktop, but would like it to kind of lurk there...not be a presence on the taskbar (or the system tray).

How are you going to be notified of a new messages or switch between conversations? I understand lack of tray icon but the taskbar entries are kind of necessary... Well pidgin does not have taskbar entry unless you chat with someone then there is a entry for the conversation taking place... I don't know how to help You with your query but the thing you are trying to do... I don't understand the reason for this. Will keep watching the thread - maybe I will understand it better when You will find the solution.

If Pidgin is permanently open then different conversations can be in the one window, but on different tabs.
If it is never minimised then there is no need for a Task Bar entry to be showing.

That is as I understand the o-p's use.

Notifications of new messages should still show from the System Tray icon, as well as indicated on the specific tabs.

Examining how I have used Pidgin since this thread started, I can say I do not use the Task Bar icon either, and have Pidgin open most of the time. I do not minimise it but instead close it and open it again from the System Tray icon.

It hasn't bothered me as I have the Task Bar separated on its own panel which auto-hides and there is no lack of space or crowding on that panel normally.

I guess the reason Gkrellm has a 'switch' for the Task Bar icon is because it is designed to run full time on the desktop and so it might not require a Task Bar icon --  it would not be minimised in the normal course of events.

I haven't found a 'switch' for Pidgin to dispense with the Task Bar icon .....  but I suppose it might be possible to do it by editing some config file .....

Can this be used, or provide a clue on how to do?

http://www.ehow.com/how_6767053_remove-pidgin-taskbar.html

I also looked in synaptic for the pidgin extended preferences mentioned in the article, and nothing jumps out at me.  I looked in pidgin under tools/plugins and checked a couple that looked helpful, and if it allowed, tried to configure plugin, but nothing seemed to help.

Here we go...it worked.

Excellent find!

Glad you found it!

I have also applied it here to see if it impacts on my use of Pidgin .....  I suspect I will leave it set to not display the icon in the Task Bar.
