Lots more info needed from you. For example, is this what you're talking about?
Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

Pclinuxos recognizes the dongle but clicking on the setup.exe file it says it doesn't know what program to open it with. In windows it just opens and adds the Wifi manager to the desktop. I dearly wish to use the system but I know dongles are often purely designed for windows systems and that's a crying shame. I hope you can help DJ. Thanks

The setup.exe file is for Windows NOT Linux. Linux does not natively run Windows programs. If Linux recognizes the dongle you  probably do not need the Windows stuff to begin with.  Have you tried setting up you dongle by going into PCC (PCLOS Control Center) choosing 'Network & Internet' and than choosing 'Setup a New Network Interface'

It may indeed, but you are not using Windows! and since the mfg of the dongle doesn't seem to supply the needed drivers for Linux, you will have to do it some other way

You can thank the supplier of your dongle for that.

After reading through a bunch of useless posts on the web. I did see the following "Though you will need a Windows PC for the initial activation/setup" on the *buntu forum

He is talking about a mobile WiFi router called Mifi (My WiFi) it appears that the 5000 series are made by Huawei. It appears that the 2000, 3000 and 4000 series were made by Novatel and ran a basic Linux OS. After searching on the web I could not find much about his exact model (E5330)

Thanks DJ,I'll try what you suggest. I'm on  pclinuxos now, using the wifi connection which  curiously. only scans and connects after I've I've had the laptop previously connected  to windows . Thanks DJ for your prompt and
thorough help. Pclinuxos is a great system   ,made so by folks like you.

What's missing here.  In your reply #5 you thanked DJ for his suggestions and help.  The only reply I see is his reply #1 as to give more information.  Did you get other suggestions that were not posted here?  What is it that I am missing here or not seeing?

Well, thanks for your vote of confidence, dodecar. But, as YouCanToo has pointed out, I merely asked for more info on your device. If you want to know how to get that device working for you in PCLinuxOS, listen to YouCanToo. He knows networking, and can even tell you how to set up a web server from start to finish. Follow his instructions, please.

I'd like to take some credit for making PCLinuxOS so great, but that credit goes first to Texstar, next to all the great packagers, to the people who create all the desktop version isos, and to the people who design the artwork and themes, then to those who offer support here on the forum. Comprende?

Yes ,I'm sorry for the misunderstanding gentlemen . I meant to thank YouCanToo,and do so now, with all apologies. Tex must be an amazing guy ,a real internet hero ,right up there with Jimmy Wales and I  hope he makes a good recovery, but you all have my admiration and respect, for making this the amazing community it is.  Now I am going to apologize  again as I gave my Huawei dongle the wrong number,it should have been E5830. Sorry for being such an clot YouCanToo. However, I did, under tutelage from AS ,get the hot spot side of the mifi dongle  connecting. Perhaps I can get the program side running under yours .Thanks.

There is no need for apologizes.  I did some more searching on the correct model E5830 and found that most folks using it and Linux had no issues connecting to it wireless. The issue is that they could not connect to it using USB or in so called "tethered mode". Also they were not able to use the Dashboard software.  Perhaps that part could be accomplished by running the Dashboard software in Wine or in a Windows virtual environment. I am not to sure if there would be any benefit to running the Dashboard software anyways.  Here is a post from a guy that talk about how he got his setup in Linux http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=40854&start=0

When you get it up and going, please be sure to drop by the PCLinuxOS Knowledge Base and add it to the hardware capability list.

Please let us know even if you don't get it to work, as it can help others, should they purchase one in the future.

Glad to hear that you got a hotspot connection at least :)
