Going to try and learn how to package

Been trying to help a little with the magazine, writing a few articles,
and been wanting to give packaging a try for a good long while.

After finding and reading the posts from the thread that longtom jr started ( http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,101178.0.html ) I believe that I now understand where to start.

I sometimes do not understand what I read so there will be many,many questions from me once I get started.
I am one of those guys that better understands from being shown than from reading instructions.

I have a lot of time to try and work on this, as I am now mostly unable to work at my profession currently, due to some
health issues.

Got go for now, mother in laws birthday - back a little later today.

I'm absolutely sure you'll do a great job. From what I've seen the people currently packaging for us are working extremely hard and will be glad to get all the help they can

Please post the INITIAL steps you take in detail.

I have been thinking of learning to package for far too long, but I am finding the entry barrier too high. My learning methods are also similar to you because I too prefer learning from actual examples.

To set up a packaging environment install vbox (in my current installation)- then install LXDE mini within vbox and install pkgutils-thunar to LXDE mini within vbox - as a start to the package enviroment ?

Hummm, guess I started on the wrong foot then. Didn't do all these steps, but I can build the packages anyway... rpmbuild created all the folders to build the packages, and often it works very well.

Ok -I got vbox installed and LXDE installed within vbox, updated lxde thru synaptic.

When I try to install pkgutils-thunar - it says it wants to install thunar(also)but it is unstable Sorry
it says not installable and won't let me install pkgutils-thunar.
should I be getting pkgutils-thunar from something other than the regular repo's

So now what ?
