<SOLVED> Determining True Amount of Free Space on HDD
« on: March 23, 2012, 06:58:19 PM »
In checking the hard drive, by using Konquor, if I use properties and wait for calculation, I get 47.4 gig used out of 65 gig. but at the bottom of the K window the graphic bar shows only 7.2 gig free. A fairly accurate calculation of the drive tells me the 47.4 gig is good.  Why the difference of about 10 gig free?

I suggest you are not checking the HDD ...  but checking a partition on that HDD.

If so ......  where is the Konqueror display 'located'?
The free space shown on the bottom is for the present location .......   not for some other location you select in the window.

Of course I might be misinterpreting what you are doing .......

there's a little utility called kdiskfree, which will show you all your partitions and how much space is free on each.
PCLinuxOS  Get it?  Got it?  Good!!   8)

OK....

In using Konq. and Dolphin I am unable to see how much space is used by each directory on the partition.
I can see how may items are present in the directory but not the space used.

Is there a way to see what each directory is using?

Could install Filelight which says:

Graphical disk usage statistics
Filelight allows you to quickly understand exactly where your diskspace is being used by graphically representing your file system as a set of concentric segmented-rings. You can use it to locate hotspots of disk usage and then manipulate those areas using a file manager.

+1 for FileLight ......  it takes a little getting used to - or did for me - but it does what it says

WOW!!! I like it!

Except, I am NOT sure how I can use a file manager to manipulate/move for space, UNLESS it is done be moving some files from one directory to another.... (I am still learning to change my thinking from WinXP and defrag)

Moving files from one directory to another on the same partition has no affect on space available - or so little it makes no difference.
