Thunderbird not opening links in Firefox

When I click a link in Thunderbird it does not open in my Firefox browser, I checked the network.protocol-handler.app.http in Tbird's config and it's pointing to the right place but it's just not working. Anybody got a suggestion I should try?

I'm on latest PCLOS, KDE version. I just updated to tbird 11, but also saw this behavior in previous versions.

If you search the forum for Firefox and Thunderbird you'll find a number of posts relating to this issue.
I have given an explanation of why it occurs here and given instructions for avoiding it.

There is also an alternative procedure here which also works.
