Fix for old Ati cards under PCLinuxOS 2011 with the xorg 1.9.5

Can someone help me with these 2 tasks?

edit the /etc/modprobe.preload file as root and add radeon as a last line
edit /etc/modprobe.conf file as root and add options radeon modeset=1

I cant find or edit these, i hate being a noob lol

Hi,

1 - you need to root access, the simplest way is: PCLinuxOS Control Center -> System -> Open a console as administrator

2 - copy & paste the following commands into your root Konsole:

echo "radeon" >> /etc/modprobe.preload
echo "options radeon modeset=1" >> /etc/modprobe.conf

Alternatively, you can use a text editor like vi, leafpad, kwrite ... to edit the files /etc/modprobe.conf /etc/modprobe.preload

If something is not clear, please ask

Thanks its working, a little slow, but working, im using an old AMD K8 with a Radeon 7000 32mb card, so to be expected really.Thanks

Many thanks to you ! I have an old Ati Radeon X300 on which I cannot enable compiz-fuz to work properly.
Now with your solution, I can enjoy the 3D Desktop.

By the way, the url you give is very long to load.... many minutes before reading the solution !

Glad I could help... About the speed - my ISP is a major pain in the butt... Sorry bout that - planning to change ISP sometime next year... Till then we all have to be patient ...

i still have to use the kwin with xrender, the fix doesn't work well for me   

the good side is that kwin is working very well

Deadline for what? Is ati or kde drops some support again?

I use xrender by default. All what I need works beautify...
