Extending the life of an old keyboard [Solved]
« on: March 09, 2012, 09:59:37 AM »
I'm using an old wireless keyboard to couch surf. Recently the i and k keys have started to fail and I'd like to continue using the equipment for a little longer.

Is there a way I can program a couple of unused function keys to map for those troubled characters? F8 = 'k' for example.

I haven't tried it but this may work: Configure your desktop > Common appearance and behaviour > Short cuts and gestures > Custom short cuts : right-click in left panel and select 'New'.

You can use Xmodmap to remap. Try 'man xmodmap' for more info or Google it...

Slick! i had looked there but didn't grok the right click for New. Works fine for my purposes. i noticed the mapping didn't
work when typing into a Terminal window but that's fine. This is just for casual couch use. Appreciate the help!

Hi. I work on computers, and go through a lot of keyboards. My own often gets dirty, or gets coffee spilled in it. I just take them apart, clean everything in the sink with soap and water, dry thoroughly, put it back together, and wa la! Another clean, working keyboard. The one O am using right now is a slim black one from Compaq. White keys, and almost silent keyboard action.
