(Solved: Proxy) Non-OSE Virtualbox offline update/installation or using proxy?

Hey there,

To access the internet I have to apply certain proxy settings. It works well with firefox and synaptic, but I haven't yet been able to apply those proxy settings system wide to e.g. run lomanager or getvirtualbox script. For the proxy I only have the IP and the port number, but when I try to change settings in PCC I am always ask to provide the proxy name like http://proxyname.com:port. So I am not really sure how to enter it correctly.

In pinoc's post http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,59009.msg474655.html#msg474655 on installation of LO, I found the option to make an offline install and download the LO installer from their website. I guess I could do the same with Oracles VB, but I am not sure how to do that correctly. Would I have to uninstall older versions prior to the new install and how would the correct procedure of uninstall and new install look like? Do I have to expect problems with the x11 drivers? I found a couple of related posts, but have not been able to get the whole picture right.

A kind of step by step instruction would be appreciated.

Don't know for sure, but usually you can replace a domain name with the IP address thus:
http://123.123.123.123:80

Tough one.  Where are you that you are accessing the internet through a proxy server? 

Problem is the proxy server may be blocking things (such as Oracles VBox download site).  It also may block protocols.  I am not sure if the script uses ftp instead of http.

I am in an third world country and my employer uses a proxy server to connect to the internet. I guess mainly to restrict access to specific websites ;-)

Any thoughts on installation of the non-OSE version of Virtualbox and uninstall of old version without using the script but direct download from Oracles website?

I am not sure if the script uses ftp instead of http.  

The script appears to be using http (excerpt):

Have you tried applying the proxy settings in PCC under Network & Internet > Proxy

Try to find another computer at work, and look at the proxy address in Internet Explorer.  It will be under tools->options->Connections->proxy settings.  Copy and paste that into your PCC control center settings.

I am currently traveling and won't have access to the required information before Friday. I will post the proxy's IP asap and try to apply the settings in PCC. I am pretty sure however that my employers proxy server won't allow me to access the required download pages which are needed to install VB via the getvirtualbox script. I sometimes use following proxy settings to download certain things and it works pretty well. I might as well use them to get the script working, but I am not sure how to apply them either in PCC or to use the script..

Good news, I solved my problem. I was able to apply the proxy settings in PCC and use the getvirtualbox script. I have tried that before, but obviously I made a mistake, probably with the "no proxy" settings.

So here is what I did:
1) create a new network profile in PCC and activate it
2) set proxy settings for this new profile

HTTP-Proxy: http://IP:Port
Tick "same proxy for https
FTP-Proxy: left blank
no Proxy: localhost,IP (note: no http:// and Port needed here) -> so maybe that is what I did wrong in the first place.

I still would be interested whether or not it is possible to make an offline install similar to the lomanager.
