[Solved] booting issues
« on: August 25, 2012, 09:47:03 AM »
Hello there.

I am having issues when starting up the machine. I can only get to the login screen if there is a live CD in the dvd drive, otherwise the system stalls.
Suspect that it's a uevents issue.

Have added the following to the blacklist-compat file:
blacklist vga16fb
blacklist nouveau
blacklist rivatv

Using:
New install of PCLinuxOS - downloaded just yesterday.
AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor
FirePro V4800 - ATI Radeon HD 2000 and later (radeon/fglrx)
‎RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm confused. You have PCLinuxOS installed on your computer and you are booting with a
live CD in device drive.

The screen should be showing the login screen of the CD which needs guest or root password to continue.

If you get login on hard drive boot up screen you need the user name you listed or the root
name you used for passwords.

Stalls where?

What is on the screen?

Have you pressed Esc during booting to see what writing is there?  Can you copy the last few lines to this thread .....  it might give us an idea where it is stalling ....  and even why .....

Sorry I wasn't explicit enough; it sounds like I'm running the live CD.
 :-\

PCLinuxOS has been installed - several times now out of frustration.

If I boot it without a CD in the drive, the machine freezes solid just before the login screen and I have to switch it off.

If I leave the live CD in the drive, installed PCLinuxOS starts up just like it's supposed to.

Hi,

My technical knowledge of linux is scanty indeed but to me this sounds like grub is looking for the mount point to be on the CD instead of one of the hard discs. You can check this by entering the PCLOS Control Centre and under Boot go to Set up boot system, it is the second line. If your not sure which hard disc to choose, go to Local Discs and Manage Disc Partitions. You can Check there what each of the discs is called. Important... Do not change anything in that catagory, get the name and get out.

Hope I'm not sending you on a wild goose chase...
Keith,
the happy chappy

Thanks very much for that idea, Keith, but the mount is set correctly.

(Kudos to the developers, they sure did a nice job - especially with the administrative tools.)

Should also note that a boot disk for Crunchbang works just as well, so it doesn't seem to be the content of the disk that's pushing it along.

Wish I could see a few lines of text, but it stalls just after it runs to the cursor before the log in screen.

Post the particulars of your computer.

Memory, video card what else is plugged into your computer.

I found on a couple of computers the boot up did not like some USB plugins and when
they were removed the computer booted.

Thanks for the help Smileeb; I really thought that you had solved it there.
Outside of the keyboard and USB mouse, there's a printer, webcam and backup HD connected.
Tried removing them one by one including the keyboard and mouse, but no luck.

AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1055T Processor
FirePro V4800 Video Card
8GB Ram
Logitech Web Cam
HP Officejet 6500 printer

It was running just fine before the power supply was replaced under warranty.

What do you think the odds are that it's a video card issue?
Afraid to do much right now because my wife has a boat-load of family photos she needs to edit and burn.
Don't want to screw around too much and lose what functionality there is, but could someone please recommend a good tutorial to replace ATI drivers?

Thanks.

This is something that you should do. Just modify your first post and add (solved) to the subject line.  ;D

p.s. do it for both threads.. ;)
