SOLVED: GIMP install failure - KDE this time
« on: March 15, 2012, 05:20:38 PM »
I'm back in circulation following the arrival of a new desktop PC, on which I've loaded the full KDE 4.6.5 distro of PCLinuxOS.  Judging by other Forum threads relating to other pclos distros, I am not alone in finding it impossible to install GIMP because of problems in relation to libpoppler13/libpoppler-glib-so.6   Before my old PC collapsed, GIMP was a package which I relied on heavily in a number of circumstances, so its absence from my brave new world presents a bit of a difficulty.   Is there a current fix which will work in KDE, or is there one in the pipeline?  If the latter, do we know the probable timescale?

Hi peter_pclos, glad to hear your good news.
Did you update after your fresh install?
Cuz I have gimp with no trouble--didn't do anything special.
Open synaptic & be sure you are fully updated.

Why, any 5 year old child could understand this.
Somebody bring me a 5 year old.

I have the same problem with Gimp.
I just installed the 2012.02 KDE and updated (clicked Reload followed by Mark Upgrades and applied).
Then I tried to install Gimp and I get this message:
gimp:
Depends: libpoppler13 but it is not installable
Depends: libpoppler-glib-so.6 but it is not installable

Almost same problem. I have 2 machines, one which is updated at least weekly and one which gets an update when I think of it.
On the regularly updated machine gimp is installed and these two lib files are in the repos so no probs.
On the other, however, when I updated today it uninstalled gimp and then gave me the same problem as you are having. What I don't understand is why the 2 files show in the repos of one machine and not the other when both are looking at the same server.

Confirmed... Seems to happen only with fresh installs as my "rolling box" just keeps Gimp "unchanged" and so working.  Needs attention.

This should be reported in Broken Packages.

IIRC both gimp and tumbler were rebuilt against the new libpoppler13 which has since been pulled from the repo.  These packages need to also be reverted or rebuilt against what is currently in the repo.

Not only fresh installs .......  updated a laptop this am and Gimp was held back because of unresolved dependencies as listed above.
It may be a couple of weeks or a bit less since the laptop was updated last.

The two dependencies have been moved to the testing section of the repo. Which makes this a good old catch 22: GIMP needs them but we are not supposed to install them on a working system, i.e. a machine used for serious work. But to some of us a setup without GIMP simply isn't a working system.

I know what I have done.

I can do without a Gimp update ....  so will await the next build of Gimp to come through, as I believe it is being prepared.

I can confirm that as of an hour ago, I was able to install GIMP without needing to use the testing repository, so the original problem is solved.

To further confirm this, I had run into the same issue on a new install a few days ago and today decided to check out the problem. I also found it is fixed.
