using a shared printer attached to windows 7 computer
« on: March 14, 2012, 04:20:37 PM »
I am brand new to linux and have used windows for many years. Can anyone give me a simplified tutorial explaining how to connect and use a printer attached to a windows 7 computer? I have searched the forum and googled for more information but I still can't connect to my printer. I can ping from the linux box to the windows one and vice-versa and I have configured samba all to no avail. I appreciate any help....I really want to succeed with linux!

In the Windows7 networkcenter you can change sharing rights, enable printing and, if you wish, disable file or media sharing.
Take care, the workgroup should be the same for Windows and Samba.
In the Windows7 programs you can, as workaround, add LPD printing service, default is off.

Happy testing,
Ed

Thank you for your response. I have already enabled sharing on the windows 7 machine and was using it when my computer had windows xp installed. I have burned my bridges and only have PCLInuxOS installed now. What else should I do? How do I configure Samba?

Thank you for your reply. I followed the excellent tutorial for configuring samba. I am still unable to access my printer. I have checked firewall settings on the windows machine. I can see the smb share I created. What else should I try?
