Which is faster Samba or Shared Folders
« on: March 13, 2012, 12:07:51 AM »
Which option results in faster access, using samba to network shared folders or using Vbox's shared folder settings?  I've always just used samba which works very well. But I was wondering if there is an advantage to just using the shared folders option?

Use shared folders.  As long as you install the virtualbox tools inside the guest they work great, and are quite fast.  I keep my guests on a separate hard drive, which makes transfers even quicker.

I just tried both ways and it doesn't seem to make any difference.  Both arrangements look to be about as fast.

Samba is (probably) more work to get setup, initially.  It has, however, the benefit of being used across the entire network (in both physical and virtual installs, in multiple OS's).

Once again, siting on the fence... ;D

Actually, I would go with Samba, but if you do not need its benefits, then Shared Folders should be simpler.
