[Solved] Pinnacle TV Card Audio
« on: March 11, 2012, 09:12:33 AM »
Hello everyone.
A coupla' years ago, I bought a Pinnacle HDTV TV Card for ol' Big Iron tower on the basis of a Blog entry that stated it would run under Linux.
It didn't.  In fact, Pinnacle was very up front stating that they would do nothing to help the Linux Community.

Fast forward to PCLOS 2012.2 KDE and LO! - Video works but audio does not.
Any ideas on redirecting audio to its proper place?

As usual, "dmesg", etc., on request.

Thnx,

CW

Charles,

Does your video card use a short line out patch cord to your sound card's line in port?

If so, make sure that you have your Capture port set up to capture from Line In, rather than the Mic.

Otherwise, you will probably need to provide more information. A web page with the specs for the tuner card would be helpful, as well as the results of the lspci command, for starters.

Thanx, Parnote.
I woulda' replied an hour earlier but I blew out my mouse 'n I had to find another - Try to make a Menu choice when the menus are jumping around!

This TV card was originally produced by Pinnacle and - I guess -  sold to Hauppauge and rebranded. I believe it is the 800i PCHD.

lspci:
"01:0a.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder (rev 05)
01:0a.1 Multimedia controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [Audio Port] (rev 05)
01:0a.2 Multimedia controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [MPEG Port] (rev 05]

Does this help?

Charles,

Ok ... a couple (few?) more questions.

First, can you answer the question about the audio patch cord (whether your card has one or not)?

Second, how about a link to the spec page for your tuner card?

Third, is this a PCI or PCIe card?

Fourth, what desktop (version) of PCLinuxOS are you running?

Fifth, are you fully updated?

Sixth, can you specify the status of the capture channel used in your sound card's setup?

Thanks!

Parnote -
1. The card does NOT have a patch cord: S-Video, Mini Remote Input, Mini Antenna Input.  That's it.
2. http://www.buy.com/prod/pctv-800i-hd-tv-tuner-22238/210639440.html , for ex.
The Conexant chip is CX 23883-39.
3. PCIe
4. PCLOS 2012.2 KDE
5. As of 5 days ago.
6. No, I can't (What do I need to do?)

Thank you,

Charlie

At least, I think so.
I ran alsaconf (See post on this section from another friend with a similar problem.) and it ran a Legacy Search and came up with a driver from the Pleistocene Era BUT IT WORKS.

Special thanx to PARNOTE for putting up with me.  I'll take the blame for this one.  Shoulda' found another computer to test Mint Linux.  PCLOS is soooo much easier and hasn't crashed yet.

Thanx everyone.

Charlie,

you card actually *should be* supported, please open a terminal and run the following command:

Code: [Select]
lspci -nn -k
identify the lines related to your card and post them here.

because of the two sound cards, one is enumerated as first, and one as second, please take a look at this thread for further info:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,90251.msg757454.html#msg757454

most probably you need to configure your /etc/modprobe.conf with something like:

Quote
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
alias snd-card-1 cx88-alsa
alias sound-slot-1 cx88-alsa

later, after a reboot, you should find in kmix (mixer applet) the settings for each card.

Additionally, pulseaudio could be a useful addition for your setup, but I will leave this suggestion and the related follow up to Just18   :D ;)

yeah, I certainly do prefer the GUI method of controlling the sound sink for each app individually, as well as all the others helpful things it does.
