That's because you have done nothing to make the USB stick bootable!  Live USB will take care of that for you, and the USB stick will work exactly like a Live CD.

Ummm, isn't LiveUSB designed to make the USB bootable? It seemed to me that by having the LiveUSB Creator burn the files to the USB would make it bootable, just like I burned a CD. It appears that I am wrong in my understanding of the LiveUSB programme. Please point me in the right direction so I can fix my USB and my mind. A search of LiveUSB did not say that I needed to actually add something to one of the files to tell it to install, if that's what you mean.

The LiveCD of LXDE runs fine on another laptop and did when I installed it onto this laptop. I didn't do anything but burn the iso file to the CD.

Sorry, but I seem to be missing something in the USB programme. I felt that djohnson's instructions were fine. The USB was formatted before using Creator 0.9.7 as EXT4 (the only choice I was offered). The USB had nothing else on it.

I'd appreciate knowing what I'm doing wrong. It's probably so obvious I can't see it. Please point me in the right direction to make the USB bootable. I'm sure others who have hit the same wall I've just hit would like to know too.

Yes, PCLinuxOS Live USB installs Grub boot loader on the MBR of the usb stick as well as copies all the files extracted from the ISO. If that does not boot it may mean that your machine's bios is not yet setup to boot from USB. You should check the boot area in the BIOS, and search for the USB key : it might be shown as one additional hard drive, or as usb media. When starting the machine to get into the bios, the stick must be inserted into the usb slot so that the bios has a chance to detect it.

It seems to be all there but it won't boot. I get a black screen with a flashing "_" cursor. Did I miss something? I followed all of djohnson's stepsin the magazine and double-checked before continuing. Before I erase the USB and try it again, is anything obvious? Do I need to provide more information?

Maybe you should explain exactly, step by step, what happens.

Start like this ........ ' I plug in the USB stick, I turn on the power ........'

"won't boot"  can have different meanings to different folks.

If you get a Grub boot option page, and select to boot PCLOS, then the USB device is bootable.

If you don't get the boot option page then you need to tell us.

More details of what you do and what happens will help clarify the situation.

Yes - that is why I mentioned it.  It doesn't just copy the files, it recreates the required folder structure.  If it still won't boot, the other posters have given you clues.
