[SOLVED] Lost DVD optical drive automount

pclos2008.1 (2.6.26.8.tex3) on Athlon with DVDrom opt drive.  Drive has always opened the KDE device daemon but now have to mount  disc via CL or with link to device on desktop.

What happened before: Had zip disks floating around so hooked up zip drive to IDE2 slave to check what was on the diskettes. Nothing,  so tossed diskettes and unhooked zip drive and now DVD optical drive is accessible but not easily and does not auto mount when inserting disk. I

-Drive shows up in PCC "local disks" but not in PCC hardware list.
-Had to add /dev/hdc to fstab whereas another PC running pclos2009.1 DOES NOT have drive in fstab and automounts fine. have tried both with and without the fstab entry.
-both users are members of cdrom group
- haldaemon running in PCC system services
-have tried 3 different drives
- BIOS shows all 3 drives as recogniized
- have tried 4 different discs

I don't hear the drive spin up when inserting disc.

Annoying to have to use a desktop "link to device" to use the drive.

Any ideas?

check your cables to the drive and motherboard as the problem occurred after you were at them ....  also if you changed the master/slave/cable-select link on the drive, return it to what it was previously.

Yes, forgot to mention that I did remove and re-insert cables and drive select jumpers. The drive does work but has to be accessed manually. Several searched threads address someone who DOES NOT want 2 drives to auto mount on boot and another with K3b not recognizing drive and another on adding to fstab but as mentioned, I have another 2009.1 install that does not need the fstab entry

Unfortunately your install is so old that it is unlikely you will find many who can help.

I certainly have no recollection of how things were done or problems that far back

[UPDATE] just checked BIOS to make sure  and reset defaults.  Now drive will automount some discs but not others. Those non-readable discs will automount on another PC running 2009.1.

However, after uncommenting the "/dev/hdc" line in fstab,  I CAN mount and read those "bad" discs via "link to device" created on desktop. It takes a long time then finally messages "mounting read only" and I am able to open w/Konq.

Strange. will mark as solved although don't really know what happened.
