After reading thorough this thread, I started playing around and found an interesting discrepancy.

If I use the the name of the PCLOS web site (www.pclinuxos.com and let the DNS server figure it out), I get a page that is too large for the display on my laptop.  That is, I have to scroll over to the right to see the link to the forum.  It is scalable with the keys or mouse wheel.

However, if I use the direct IP address (199.231.58.82), I get a page that will fit into the window, no matter the size.  No horizontal scroll bar at all, but the text is smaller.  The content does appear to be the same.  It is scalable with the keys or mouse wheel.

Looks to me like I'm getting two different pages (either different html or different css files), else they would look (and act) the same.

What else could cause that?   Does the Firefox save the scaling?  I haven't noticed it doing that for other sites.  Or am I  missing something, here?

Doing the same as you did, I get the same display no matter what I enter. IE: either the domain name or the IP address. If the issue you are seeing had to do with the server (configuration) one would expect it to happen for all users. As demonstrated between what you are seeing and that which I am seeing, this can not be the cause of the issue.  Also after looking over the server configuration file I see no way possible that Apache would be able to serve different pages when requesting either the domain name or the IP address.

Did you get O-P's permission to post that PM? It is not good to post a PM from someone without getting their permission.

I'm cool with it. I just did it off the thread so as to not to add confusion from possibly conflicting instructions from various other replies, until my checking was done. The fact that the user name and email he's currently using didn't trigger a ban message eliminated that, so I concentrated on IP address blocks and hostname ban triggers, and found nothing even close.

I do apologize for that,O-P!What I need learn are not only pclos and linux, but also  are how to be a forum member and manners of forum member!

Hi friends,Sorry so late, but I have done a lot of efforts on this morning:
Quote
1)I had posted this question to three different IT oriented forums of China and waited for the results.
2)I used "lynx" this software to visit pclinuxos.com,but the result is disappointed.
3)I followed the suggestions from kjpetrie, and used a another distro liveCD(I do not have a CD-rw,so I can not make one by myselft and I have only 1G usb stick which is almost full),tried to reach internet from liveCD booting, and I am doing some researches how to do that!

I got some useful informations in step 1,here is result:
Majority people from everywhere in my country meet the same problem as mine, but three people
told me they can reach www.pclinuxos.com nomally! One person is in Sichuan province,One guy is from Zhejiang province and the other guy do not told me where he is.My test includes 3 questions:
1)could you visit pclinuxos.com nomally? I had posted snapshots to show what statement is nomal
2)where are you ? which province?
3)Which ISP do you use? there are two main ISPs in China,China Telecom and China Unicom

The ISPs of this three men: 2-China Unicom ,1- China Telecom (mine is Chian Unicom).
The guy from Zhenjing province had told me some additional infomations:
1)His DNS is : 8.8.8.8
2)His ISP: China Unicome
3)His browser is : Midori
4)he is using ipv6

and this is his traceroute result:
Code: [Select]

So what do you think,my friends?

========================
let me talk about ""lynx",I do not why I do a test with it ,I just want to test a different browser,I have used Firefox,Opera,IE.The result is the same, but one message may be useful:
when I typed "lynx www.pclinuxos.com" and returned, some messages  flashed instantly, but I can see the final message is "Alert!:HTTP/1.1 4.3 Forbidden",is this useful?

I hope to get replys from you,my friends ^=^
I will be back in 2 hours later, forgive me!

A big news! ;D ;D ;D

I got a method to tackle this issue, and a participant in my test told me that he could visit our forum using opera with opera turbo. This method is really useful.I had tested opera before, but without opera turbo,so the result was disappointed.I am not familiar with opera and opera turbo,I had searched some informations about opera turbo, and I think this tech is not the method  as we  want a direct visiting,it is similar to proxy tech, right? By the way,I think this method makes me go further because I can use functions of forum like this: :D :D :D

I am glad to say that I had succeeded in logging on internet with a ubuntu LiveCD booting! The bad news is nothing different!
I convinced this is a pure English system, two snapshots:
1) http://postimage.org/image/ee0az37un/
2) http://postimage.org/image/prmuaaidb/

This is another useful information.I had contacted with a friend and she is in Japan. She is a Chinese and her system is win7 in Chinese.
She can visit pclinuxos.com normally,so I think this issue is not related to character set encoding,This is her snapshot:

As workaround add pclinuxos to your /etc/hosts file

Quote

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain

199.231.58.82 www.pclinuxos.com

I'm not surprised, but at least that eliminates DNS as the cause.

I think it's time to try and get some data!

Is wget installed in your pclos? If not, perhaps you could install it.

Then open a terminal and try wget -S --spider http://www.pclinuxox.com/ and post the output. This will just be the response headers from the server, and they might give a clue as to how the server sees your request (and even whether it still looks like the same server).

You can copy from a terminal with Ctrl+Shift+C after highlighting the text with your mouse.

I had finished my job, kjpetrie! here is the snapshot
Code: [Select]
[julian@localhost ~]$ wget -S --spider http://www.pclinuxos.com/
Spider mode enabled. Check if remote file exists.

I found DeBaas's advice is very useful, that is why I can use ping cmmand in pclinuxos now!
But traceroute and xtraceroute can not work correctly!

Thanks for posting it. I can't access postimage.org by HTTP from here. I can ping it but HTTP gets "no route to host".

The plot thickens! You're getting a Forbidden response but being sent the test page instead of the default forbidden message!

Let's just confirm that by changing the command to:

wget -SO- http://www.pclinuxos.com/

This will scroll the whole page out, but you should be able to scroll the terminal back up to the top. We only need to see down as far as the HTML <title>...</title> tag.

The headers you get are different (less detailed) than I get, but I can't tell whether that's because a Forbidden access gets less information or whether it indicates a different machine. However, if Neal or O-P have access to the server logs they should be able to see your Forbidden access in there if it is the same machine.

It is running the same version of Apache.

That is too bad!I had changed three picture bed websites to show my snapshots, final I chose postimage.org because I see a Pal(I forget who he is) use this website to show me a picture in our forum, and then no one complaints that he can not see those pictures after I use postimage.org,so I insist on it.What is your suggestion where I post those snapshots to,I would re-upload those snapshots  ::)

and Thank you for your help kjpetrie and thank you other friends! It is my bed time,so I have to leave.see you tomorrow!

I don't know. The fear of copyright infringement seems to have removed a lot of content-hosting sites and it seems to change day by day.

I don't understand why Firefox displays the test page, unless it is showing cached content.

Anyway, you've got a Forbidden response from Apache, so it looks as if it's down to Neal or O-P to check the server logs for your access attempt and confirm whether or not it was the pclos server that responded. There should be an "Access denied by server configuration" in the error log and a 403 recorded in the access log at 13:46:03 GMT.

If there is, then the server configuration must be set to deny you access. If there isn't, it's possible you are being blocked upstream by the hosting company, or the IP really is being hijacked for port 80.

We can go no further. It's up to those in charge to take it from here.
