lock screen?
« on: March 16, 2012, 01:50:42 AM »
Is there a command to lock the screen, or if not, is there a program that stores the screen image, and can be called on to replace it?
I have applied "lock widgets" but I find that some icons move around at their own whim, for no apparent reason.

There's an option to lock the screen with almost any screensaver. Set the option, and you need your user's password to unlock it.
Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

You can also run xlock from a terminal...

xlock: command not found.  Tried Find Files and Folders, both for filename and content--not there.

As to the screensaver command, I don't think this is what I'm looking for.  I don't know what causes the widgets to move arbitrarily or exactly when, but
locking the screen 10 minutes after the screen blanks probably will not help, and having to use a password to open it up again would be a pain.  I need
something like the Windows freebie, Desktop Save and Restore--I think that's what it's called.  (When you have all the icons placed where you want
them, you right-click on the desktop and say save, and if they ever move, or even if you move them yourself by accident, then you right-click again and
say restore, and all goes back to the way it was.)
(BTW, I've been using pclos since mid-2010, and I never saw this behavior until quite recently--it must be an artifact of something that was upgraded.)

Thanx.

Misunderstood what you were looking for...

...also, seems I must have installed that in the past, at some point.  I don't have it on my current install, either.  If there is ever any interest, install xlockmore from Synaptic (and xlockmore-gtk2 for a GUI front-end, it seems).

Yes, there is.

Locking widgets or icons in their places on the desktop is not the same as locking the screen.

@pags,

LXDE has the lxlock command.

Lock Widgets doesn't affect icons.  Try right clicking on the desk top and hold the cursor over Icons from the popup menu.  You should see choices to Sort Icons, Align to Grid, or Lock in Place.   Once you have them the way you want them, try Lock in Place - they should stay put.

Thanx to The Chief--that's what I was trying to do.  (Now to see if it works when the icon pack-rat comes along!)  If nothing moves in a day or two, I'll mark this solved.

Thanx again--doug
