Sound not going through HDMI

Sometimes I want to hook my PCLOS laptop up to the tv via hdmi, and it works great at detecting and outputting the video right, but the audio isn't outputting along with it.

Right now my workaround is plugging in a cord that goes from the laptop's headphone out to a reciever's RCA inputs, and outputting audio through there. It works pretty good but thats one more cable I have to plug in, it would be nice if I could just go through the tv. I mean, I know hdmi should be carrying that sound, right?

You don't mention your hardware but, in general, you could install PulseAudio so you can select the audio output to your liking.
At least that's what I've done, and everytime I connect my TV to the laptop, I select the HDMI audio output using the mixer.

+1 for PulseAudio .......  it will give you full control over sound source and sink.

You can even have it change to the HDMI output on a 'per application' basis ......  so if you use one app to play content into the TV then that app's settings will be remembered for the next time it is used.

You do need to install   pavucontrol   separately as it is not included in the task-pulseaudio install.

Pulseaudio's working fine but I need a little more information regarding how to set up my output on a per app basis as Just18 described. I see that after using an application that it can be set in pavucontrol but the settings relate to volume, not output on a per-app basis.

It is automatic .........  when you use an app ......  lets say VLC ....  to play video .....  and have several audio sinks enabled in the Configuration tab of pavucontrol, go to the Playback tab while VLC is playing, and there you can select which audio sink it should use ........  HDMI or maybe Internal Analogue.

The next time you launch VLC it will use the last audio sink it was using.

Other apps can be set to use the internal sound card in a similar manner.

This is what I'm seeing. Top part's the hdmi with mplayer playing, bottom's pavucontrol's playback settings for mplayer.  There's no place to select anything else in there.

Furthermore, in the configuration tab, I can only select one audio sink at a time, it just says internal audio Profile. There's a list including HDMI and Stereo output, but I can't pick both. When I switch from hdmi or back in the profile, it just turns hdmi on or off for the whole system

If you only have one sound card then only one will appear on the Configuration tab.
As you can see from the pic below my HDMI output is separate to the Internal Audio sound card .....  the HDMI output being on a graphics card.

The selection on the Playback tab allows choosing the device used, so if you only have one device then I expect you to not have a choice.

If you are using onboard Audio and HDMI then I suspect this is the case ....  only one card present.

There may be some means of doing that ......  I would not know unfortunately. You may be able to find something on line about it.
