Opera problem printing to postscript file
« on: March 28, 2012, 06:32:48 PM »
I am working on some printing problems and during this I got a bit of a blow my favourite web browser Opera seems to have hit a snag somewhere.  I am running a slim fully updated KDE-mini.

Code: [Select]
[gert@KDE-mini-Cprog ~]$ uname -a
Linux KDE-mini-Cprog.localdomain 2.6.38.8-pclos3.bfs #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 8 18:01:30 CDT 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[gert@KDE-mini-Cprog ~]$

Simple test, print the pclinuxos home page  http://www.pclinuxos.com/ to postscript file, in my case the filesize is:

Quote
[gert@KDE-mini-Cprog 120317-blayne-printer_pdf_problem]$ ls -la
...........................
-rw-r--r--  1 gert gert   719088 Mar 29 11:00 120329-blayne_pclinuxos_homepage_konqueror _postscript_glk.ps
-rw-r--r--  1 gert gert   324205 Mar 29 10:46 120329-blayne_pclinuxos_homepage_opera _postscript_glk.ps
.........................
[gert@KDE-mini-Cprog 120317-blayne-printer_pdf_problem]$

Printing the same to Konqueror web browser gives me all four pages, whereas Opera produces Page 1 beautifully shows page 2 empty with 2 pages at least missing.

Konqueror file shows 'everything' ie the total home page.

I expect that FF will also do the right thing but do not have FF installed on this system.

I use Okular to view the postscript files and as a backup I have GhostView, they both agree Opera skipping part of the complete page.

Any Opera lovers able to confirm/deny my results?    :)

Added:
Careful closer look shows that Konq seems not to print correctly to a .ps file.  Viewed in Okular the left hand pane(s) have been moved onto page 2, ie it seems all the information is there.

I now have a FF file printed from another KDE-mini which is lacking a bit in updating, Viewed in Okular the image at the top of the page is missing but the panes on the left are on page 1. The rest of the pages are there. The size of the FF:

.........................
-rw-r--r--  1 gert gert  4018744 Mar 29 12:36 120329-blayne_pclinuxos_home_FireFox_KDE-mini_glk.ps
-rw-r--r--  1 gert gert   720468 Mar 29 13:01 120329-blayne_pclinuxos_home_Konq_KDE-mini_glk.ps

-rw-r--r--  1 gert gert   719088 Mar 29 11:00 120329-blayne_pclinuxos_homepage_konqueror_postscript_glk.ps
-rw-r--r--  1 gert gert   324205 Mar 29 10:46 120329-blayne_pclinuxos_homepage_opera_postscript_glk.ps
................
[gert@KDE-mini-Cprog 120317-blayne-printer_pdf_problem]$

Opera has printed the first page correctly, left hand pane is on page 1 and top image is in place but page 2 empty and page 3 and 4 is missing. (Indication in the filesize too)

Edit2
Received a blow, a day later returning to printing from Opera it has now printed pclinuxos homepage correctly to .ps and .pdf files ( .pdf I have assumed not to be a problem, first time tested printing to a pdf file), I really don't understand.  I have returned to using LAN cable.

Also found out that just printing the test files here:

Quote
/usr/share/printer-testpages/testpage-a4.ps  <---colour embedded
/usr/share/printer-testpages/testpage.asc      <---ascii file, simple text and it is passed as such to postscript printer
/usr/share/printer-testpages/testpage.ps      <---colour embedded
/usr/share/printer-testpages/testprint.ps       <---colour embedded

The .ps files come out blank, unless printed in RAW mode, who will remember to do this?? I don't understand yet.

Printing blank pages when I use:
Quote
lp -d hp-laserjet-2300dn /usr/share/printer-testpages/testprint.ps

To do actual successful printing on my hp Laserjet 2300dn I use:
Quote
lp -d hp-laserjet-2300dn -o raw /usr/share/printer-testpages/testprint.ps
