Skype on my MSI 163k laptop...

I have tried every option in the microphone option... all nine of them.

One does nothing, while the other eight I sound muffled and far away.

I even tried my Steel Series 4H headphones with built-in mic.  Same results.

Is there something I'm missing?

this works for me on kde4, are you on kde4?

what sound card do you have?
