Just did an update and it really messed up my system.
« on: June 30, 2012, 12:51:35 AM »
After doing a system update today, my system is really messed up.

I don't know how far the screw up goes, but settings have been lost on many of my configurations and applications.

Haven't checked everything, but in just the first few minutes, of trying things since the update, I've observed that:
- my four desktops lost their background images
- Kwrite lost its configuration settings
- Terminal lost its configuration settings,
- my window settings are all screwed up
- font sizes are changed in windows, terminal, and applications
- Some files open with only the menu bar showing and when I
double click on the menu bar, only the menu bar still shows and it
goes from a smaller width to a wider width, but no content shows.
- The system seems to be doing a lot of odd things that it did not previously do.

I don't know how far this mess-up goes, but I'll have to start attempting to manually reset all of my configurations and application settings, and then see what further unwanted surprises lie ahead.

Very frustrating!

Read all those links, but .kde.bak and .kde are identical and I still have a mess with not only messed up configurations but many other things that used to work no longer work.

Look at .kde4.bak >>> .kde4 / not .kde.bak >>>.kde

Perhaps he logged out before swapping the .kde files.  That would have overwritten the .kde.bak file wouldn't it?

It will not. The only way the two directories could end up being identical is if the kde4-conf package was installed twice, before the repair was attempted, or if the new .kde4 was copied to kde4.bak manually, after the package installation, thus destroying the original backup.

I bow to your knowledge but I'm confused.  What events cause the .kde.bak file to be written?

I did the update on my Laptop a while ago and made a few changes before reading the post about swapping the .kde files.  The .bak file had already been written to so I had to reinstate my desktop the hard way. Fortunately not too difficult as the laptop hasn't much customisation of the desktop.

Russell.

P.S. Thanks OP.  I must have done something wrong when trying to fix it.

What would have possibly written to the .kde4.bak directory? It would be a brand new backup of the existing desktop configurations, made before the new .kde4 directory was created. Only the new .kde4 directory would get written to, by the running system. The .kde4.bak will remain intact and usable for it's intended purpose until such time as it is used to restore the desktop to its former state, or the kde4-conf package is reinstalled, yet again.

I know it's anecdotal, but same happened to one of my PCs: did the updated, the rebooted, and copied bak over - just to have all reset.
Of course, since all other machines worked fine, I put it down to a one-off glitch.

Cheers!
