With the proper drivers loaded (even the scanner package) I am unable to make the MP280 print. PCC sees it, it is listed when I do lsusb in a terminal, and when I print a test page, the GUI shows success, I see the number display on the printer flash as if it were receiving data, but nothing prints. The printer will do a copy from the printer itself. On scanning, similar problem as printing. I run the scanner program from the command line, and try to scan, the printer starts, then hangs. I have reinstalled the drivers and the scan program, tried configuring the printer through CUPS and PCC. No joy. Any suggestions?

EDIT;
I tried another USB cable, checked the power and ensured all the shipping strips were removed. Still no joy. All suggestions welcome.

I don't have a solution, but I can confirm having the same experience with a Canon MF4150 on 2 different computers - one with KDE and the other with LXDE.  The driver is not found automatically.  I have to install the Linux UFRII driver found on Canon's website.  I thought it was a problem with the driver installation.  In the past I could always get it working, but in the last 6 months or so... no luck.

I will download and manually install the RPMs and see what happens. Thanks for at least confirming I am not the only one seeing this.

Make sure you have the task-printing and task-printing-canon packages installed.
I don't have the printer that you have (mine are HPs) but unless I install the task-printing packages, no printing happens.
There is a task-scanning package too, which you may need.

The task-whatever packages are meta pacakges and pull in a number of packages related to the task.

In my case, I do have those packages installed.  Still doesn't work.

I am able to print to a couple of network printers with no problems at all.

Installed all the task printing and task scanning packages. Rebooted, just to be sure. Still no joy. Send a print job, the LED on the printer cycles as if it were receiving data, but then nothing from the printer. I live in Saudi Arabia. The time frame to return this printer was short and I missed that window. So, I am stuck. Any more suggestions?

Even with task-printing-canon installed, there are a number of cnijfilter-* packages not installed.  There are packages that cover *mp160, *mp510 and *mp600.  I don't know if any of these would cover the MP280 (this is a PIXMA printer?)

I too had trouble printing with a Canon printer - different model. Fortunately, this printer didn't need to be returned as I had won it in a competition. In the end, after much head scratching, I packed up the printer, gave it to our daughter, and bought an HP 2050 fpr $NZ 59.

PCLinuxOS 2012 found the printer, found the driver and printed. Scanning also works perfectly.

Good luck,
