That is fine, this is one of the standard settings, as you can see there are several variables we can change unfortunately. I am making the assumption that Section 3. information is based on a "standard setting".

Top entry then try and change to /dev/modem this will be almost more than interesting to see.  Test it, if you can open the connection.

I changed the setting to /dev/modem and then clicked open, but nothing happens. also checked /dev/ttyUSB0 - /dev/ttyUSB1 - /dev/ttyUSB2 and still nothing.

for the moment stick with /dev/modem only
the change the flow control, last item to RTS/CTS

ok i left it as /dev/modem and changed Flow Control to RTS/CTS. and clicked open but still nothing.

Leave the flow control as is, change the speed to 38400 and check
If still nothing reset flow control and check again

Are you running putty from su?

i changed the settings to what you said, and still no connection. i`m not running Putty as SU but from the desktop way, if you know what i mean.

OK, time for another approach.  Running as su may cause further problems, leave that at the moment. Fine running Putty from desktop.

KPPP did allow you some access, let us see if we can sneak out some details via the modem tab here.

First, when I open KPPP I see a request for ISP login details, I don't touch this and go to Configure, here I see the modem TAB and enter, a blank screen (have no modem)

If you follow this procedure, ie no login details supplied, what do you see in the modem TAB?

i opened KPPP with no login details and go to modem tab, i see modem0

1..  any response from /dev/modem0
2.. same for /dev/ttyUSB1

In KPPP
3.. can you do anything with the modem0

You had some response before using KPPP and I guess that selecting the modem gave an opportunity to do something?

 /dev/modem0 - no response
 /dev/ttyUSB1 - no response

In KPPP:

 I fill out my account detalis but when i try to connect it asks for a telephone number.

The link is great, I can understand the lingo now.  I will need to study it a bit later, tonight.

He is confusing me a bit with the naming. A modem in my language works in data mode or command mode the flipping he is talking about used to be done with ESC sequences. An appauling lack of information on the valid AT commands and definitions.   I downloaded the manual which from my point was not of any use.

Well have to accept it is a bit more complicated in Linux but it is just a matter of time before these things get solved.

I notice he says that ppp dialer can be used, that makes sense but I don't yet understand.  If that is the case then KPPP somehow can be used I would expect.

Nothing lost by using the telephone number:  *99#

atdt *99# the blue is the dial command after which the 03123456789 cokes when using a landline.

This is interesting! Using gnome-ppp setup like this below, connects to the net but disconnect can only be done by using network manager.
Setup:
Device: /dev/ttyUSB2 (use detect button)
Type: Analog Modem (usb does not work)
Speed: change to max 460800
Init String: AT!SCACT=1,2
Dial Prefix: *99#
Everything else left at default.
No User Name, Password or Phone Number
