terminal emulators are programs like the terminal you have used so far, with the addition that you would need one that connect to your sierra device. Looking at the instructions there are the commands you should enter, but there is no indication on how to connect ... i.e. could be /dev/ttyUSB0 or could be something else ... ( /dev/wwan0 ? )

more or less like you typed commands in terminals, you should use a terminal emulator to connect the sierra and then type
a couple of commands to connect and a couple of commands to disconnect ...

Also, I have never used but there should be another program to do the job in a better way "vwdial" that should allow to configure that commands (ID, password, seq. to connect, seq. to disconnect, ..) ...

I think yes, that should be similar to vwdial ... still I don't see which device you should use ...

try /dev/ttyUSB0 or /dev/wwan0 ...

/dev/ttyUSB0 - Permission denied - that was under SU and normal mode.
/dev/wwan0   - No such file or directory

what i did try was i opened KPPP program and clicked on configure - modems tab - edit.

when the edit modem box appears i clicked on modem device and tried /dev/modem, then clicked the modem tab and pressed query modem: ATI query box appears and says looking for modem, modem found. modem query results -

ATI:   empty
ATI1: empty
ATI2  empty
ATI3  empty
ATI4  empty
ATI5  empty
ATI6  empty
ATI7  empty

So enter my username & password in the settings, but it asked for a telephone number so i put in telstra.bigpond. tried to connect but it failed.

Now i know that the sierra 320U is in /dev/modem. is there some way to use the terminal to make sure that the /dev/modem is set to default ?

Is there anything in your manual about the AT-Command set?  There ought to be a listing of at least the default values.  This unit is however much later date than what I have worked with.

ATI is/was standard information command later expanded to include a number as you have shown.  I would have expected some modem model details in what you have shown.

The AT command set is different from unit to unit but with some/lot commonality.

I am not sure if you would want to go deeper into this.  You can however do amazing things, well in the older telephone modems you certainly could.  My last memory in the area was that Wireless commands sections were being added to the AT command set.

The AT command set will allow you to interrogate the modem settings, very handy. Allow you to reset factory default profile values, store custom default profile values and much much more.

ATZ, ATZ0, ATZ1  from memory was associated with setting/selecting default profile settings but you should see if you can locate a listing for your modem.

Thanks, for resetting my focus. I read through the webpage. Most interesting.  In section 3. I recognise the format of the commands and I used to decode those in the old days. I think it is obvious they are not letting you into the details.

1.. KPPP is a complete dialer internet connector when you use the PPP protcol, as I understand this is more than what is needed for 'talking to' the modem.  Having said that if you know the program well then a subset of the program may well be able to just talk to the modem in "command mode".

As I see it KPPP allows you to set up a complete profile for dialing your ISP and log on ready for your web browser to take over. I think here to be able to follow some of section 3 instructions it would pay to try gtkterm first and perhaps if necessary later minicom, both of which should be in Synaptic. (I used gtkterm because of its simplicity, hard to get lost in settings  ;D, for remote konsole output logging of kernel messages, on machines with serial ports)

2.. Section 3. indicates you can use a comms terminal and do not tell you the settings, creates a bit of a challenge.  Further when started I think gtkterm will be configured for /dev/ttySx this may not be a big problem perhaps just change to /dev/modem .

3.. If this connects then the section 3. commands can be used.

I assume this is in one of windows in KPPP, at this stage I don't think you can enter your APN in the phone number window as the letters would go into the dialing of numerals subroutine in KPPP.

The use of your APN with comms connection would be here

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","telstra.bigpond"

wedgetail & AS, Thanks for that information. i will read section 3 and see how i go. very helpful guys as i know very little about PCLinuxOS.

Those settings you gave me, where there is IP in red which is below, do i leave that as IP or is it telstra.bigpond`s IP number or my IP number ?

 AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","telstra.bigpond"

can i use Putty to enter that setting ?

I don't think it is a PCLOS problem any longer, I may be wrong though.

About the IP, I really wondered about this.  If you have an IP I think I would be tempted to insert it, especially if you have a static IP.  If you have a dynamic it should stay as IP I expect. Just try.

I am also guessing the you will get limited error messages out of the modem. If you connect via gtkterm my first command would be ATI that should be fairly innocent, then you know you are in 'command mode'

Whatever you need to convince yourself that you are in command mode before you can expect below to work.

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","telstra.bigpond"

Edit: Missed Putty
Putty, I know the name and I think the answer is yes. I will do a quick check on the net.

Edit2:
Putty, no this is a bit more complicated than it needs to be.  Do you have any computing/programming background ?   In which case I would say go ahead.  I just looked at the configuration page in the Wiki, and noticed a few things that reminds me of a ftp program, again I believe this is unnecessary.

If you install gtkterm I can be of some more practical help.  However do what you feel comfortable with.

Ooops, I forgot you have problem getting connected or can you somehow use Synaptic via LAN cable.  If not, in that case it is better I guess that I install KPPP and check first.

What options do you have installed? KPPP and Putty

No putty should be fine, I have just installed it on another system.  To my surprise I actually had KPPP on that too. My opinion not KPPP to use.

In putty, in left pane right at the bottom tell what you have in serial settings, something like:

/dev/ttyS0-9600-8-n-1-none-xon/xoff
