SOLVED: DVD will not play
« on: February 26, 2012, 05:11:07 PM »
Hi
I recently bought a Bob Munden trick shooting DVD from the State's, and despite having all the codec's such as libdvdcss xine-ui and w32codec-all installed, I can not play the dvd on my laptop.
The strange thing is the dvd will play on my dvd player, but since the cat hide the dvd remote I can not access all the menus.
Can anyone suggest a codec that will make the d%**m thing work please.
Regards Jim

PS, I tried adding the codecs the guys recommended no luck, it wont even let me copy the disk with K9 or KB3, and VLC just closes, O well never mind I will watch what I can on the DVD player, and hope the cat brings the remote back.

It could be the region code setting on your laptop dvd player. I'm guessing you live elsewhere than the USA. Is your stand alone dvd player region free?

A couple of thoughts, does the dvd show in /media and can it be mounted?  It might be that your laptop just does not like the disk.
If regionalisation is the problem, used to be that VLC ignored it, maybe still the case.

You have to be careful, there will only be 4 changes of region permitted before it is fixed for good. You could try ripping the dvd to your laptop drive.  There are many utilities in the repo for this from dvd:rip to transcode. Which ones bypass the region coding I'm not sure, because I use win dvddecrypter with WINE.

This is the only region 1 DVD I possess and to play it on my DVD player it was a rip-and-reburn job.

Some error messages might help resolve the problem ......

If using VLC got to Tools - Messages raise the verbosity level to 2 and then attempt to play the DVD.

The message window will show exactly what is happening, and can be copied for examination  ;)

I think you may be right, this is the first time I have tried playing a USA DVD on this laptop.
But you look just like the cat that hid my remote, so you would say that :)

oldjim,

If it is the region code, like Nok said, look for libdvdcss2 in Synaptic, along with the packages Leiche suggested.
Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video
LXDE 32bit                            KDE 64bit

Hi
Guys no it's not the region code, I have libdvdcss2, and the codecs Leiche recommended, still no joy.
I am completely baffled, and more than a little fed up, I even tried rich2005  solution, but that did not work ether.
O well, that's the way the cookie bonces.

I am not sure what to call the new anti-piracy scheme... anti-linux scheme would be more accurate IMHO.

How about we call it "Thor Syndrome"

I had to drag my old freestanding player out of basement.  But I did later find my that the ancient copy of PowerDVD in windows could even play it.  Rather use the freestanding player than boot windows  :D

Hi Guys
I am glad to say that my last few brain cells finally made a connection, and I pulled my old external DVD drive down from the shelf, connected it to my laptop, and low and behold my DVD plays.
I can not believe it took me so long to think of it, I guess it is true that the older you get the more brain cells you lose.
I am going to mark this post as solved.
My regards to every one who tried to help.

Perhaps as we get older, we need to learn how to think in reverse. After all, it always seems to be the last thing we think of, or in the last place we think to look.  :)

Really pleased that you have it working, I did allude to this in my post " It might be that your laptop just does not like the disk."

It is not all that uncommon for DVD drives to be a bit 'picky' over media.  I have 2 stand-alone recorders/players and normally I stick to Verbatim media, but once as a favour (friend over-ordered) got a tub of datawrite tatanium which play in my old Liteon but not in a newer Samsung. Reverse for dual layer, some TDK (still have half-a-tub) play in the Samsung but not in the LIteon.

As with yourself,  I keep an old but very reliable samsung ide drive in a usb caddy 'just in case'.
