[SOLVED]--2010 release - current release: upgrading issues
« on: February 25, 2012, 12:28:01 PM »
I pulled out my desktop that's been packed away since late 2010 and tried to update. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was a little too much at once.

It appears to have mostly-upgraded (the menus were changed, etc.) but I couldn't open any programs, so I rebooted.

Now it's stuck at the boot screen and I don't know what to do. I tried running it normally as well as in safe mode, and neither make it.

Suggestions?

2010 is too old, please reinstall using on of the latest official isos and subsequently do a full update of your system bi-weekly.

Thanks.

I used my laptop to burn a current CD like you instruct, but it's not picking up the CD despite me changing the BIOS setup. It's trying to work the CD (you can hear it) but it's still attempting the 2010 version, and it's still hung up.

I disabled the quick boot so I can see more things . . .

I clicked F8 to select BBS, which had the boot devices in a different order than the BIOS screen when I got there via the DEL key.

I selected CDROM and it hums loudly like it's given it a go but to no avail.

Usehername , did you check your media after the burn? "md5sum".

How did you burn the .ISO? What software and at what speed?

Also, have you in anyway verified that the CD/DVD player works?

This is just a very short list of things someone might need to know when trying to diagnose your problem.  ;) ;D

Thanks! Learning to anticipate the right questions is half of the job of the n00b, and you're helping me out here ;D !

I am using a 2010 Macbook as my working computer, so I downloaded it using the default OS and burned KDE 2012.02 at a speed my Macbook described as "4x."  When the first CD didn't work I burned a second copy and tried that one just in case. My macbook CD/DVD is confirmed as fine, but I am not able to confirm that the CD/DVD player on my desktop works.

When I can intervene at the terminal-looking part of the boot screen, most of the auto-checks are green "OK," though a small number of them (at least 3) are flagged as red "FAILED." I don't know how to slow down the auto-check or scroll back up when it's complete (in fact, I don't really know what I'm doing to get there in the first place other than hitting buttons displayed on the screen!), so the only ones I can confirm are from phone photos. They have something to do with my wireless desktop abilities (which I knew were malfunctioning from a while back). I think these are irrelevant to my current goals, but just in case they are:

Quote
KNOWN FAILURES:
"Bringing up interface wlan0: Error for wireless requrest "Set Encode" (8BZA) :
SET failed on device wlan0 : Invalid argument. FAILED

Bringing up interface wlan1: rt18187 device does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. FAILED

Starting Avahi daemon: FAILED

I get this message on boot:

EXPRESS GATE IS NOT INSTALLED ON YOUR SYSTEM OR THE INSTALLATION IS INCOMPLETE. TO GET INTERNET ACCESS.... PLEASE USE .... TO INSTALL EXPRESS GATE. (blurry photos, sorry.)

I have no idea how to check "md5sum."

I am assuming that I screwed it up when I tried to update from 2010 to 2012.02 rather than the CD/DVD. It half-succeeded, as I mentioned above. I imagine I interfeered with stuff that I need to resolve.

I doubt that the state of your "current" install is interfering with your inability to boot from the CD.

You should be able to just make sure the CD is in the drive and boot. There is no point when you should have to do anything until the boot process asks you a few simple questions.

If you are not getting that far into the boot process, I would suspect

a) Your "CMOS" is not configured to try the CDROM as first boot location,

b) A bad burn, or

c) A hardware failure.

Just my thoughts. I am by no means an expert.  ;)

Oh. Good to know. (Serious n00b tone here--not sarcasm.) Thanks, Rudge.

a) Your bios is not trying the CDROM first

This is very possible. I selected it first in the BIOS menu, but when I clicked F8 to get to the BBS, it had floppy first, then hard drive, then CD. I'm not certain it implemented this order or just displayed this order. I clicked CD.

I'm not confident my interventions are succeeding

b) A bad burn

I'm scared to try to poke a Linux CD for information on my functional macbook (I'm a grad student and need a working computer). I'll ask friends tomorrow, thanks for this tip.

c) A hardware failure. [/i][/color]
The CD drive started sounding funny when I tried to record what was going on on the 10th try. Like it was mad. Very possible.

Usehername,
Check the md5sum of your downloaded ISO.
Code: [Select]
md5sum fullname-version.iso
Do this from a terminal in the directory where the ISO is located.

Hi Usehername,
on a Mac the command is:
Code: [Select]
md5 fullname-version.iso. It is not clear to me if you attempt to install PCLinuxOS on a PC or on a Mac, the latter may be very difficult or not work at all.

Your is a ASUS computer ... right ?  Be sure to disable EXPRESS GATE feature in BIOS.

@AS Thanks--I disabled it like you suggested.

@NealManBear
Thanks, but I don't understand your suggestion. I don't know about any terminal on my Macbook, and my PC isn't booting enough to get to the terminal.

and @pinoc
Can you rephrase? Your syntax here is a bit confusing.

If you are trying to boot the new ISO, that photo show it is doesn't boot.
Instead it show the boot of the already installed PCLOS 2010, clearly corrupted ...

When you will be able to boot from LiveCD, as first thing run "mediacheck" this will assure that your media is good!

What pinoc is saying is that what you need to do to verify that the CD is valid is to put it in the drive on your Mac and enter the command that he supplied.  "md5 fullname-version.iso".

This is not going to do anything to your Mac, it will simply try to pull the md5sum off and you then will need to compare it with what it is supposed to be.

I don't know what version you are trying to install so I don't know what the md5sum is supposed to be but it can be found wherever you downloaded from.

I hope I am not confusing you more.  ;D
