I doubt that the state of your "current" install is interfering with your inability to boot from the CD.

a) Your bios is not trying the CDROM first
This is very possible. I selected it first in the BIOS menu, but when I clicked F8 to get to the BBS, it had floppy first, then hard drive, then CD. I'm not certain it implemented this order or just displayed this order. I clicked CD.
I'm not confident my interventions are succeeding
b) A bad burn
I'm scared to try to poke a Linux CD for information on my functional macbook (I'm a grad student and need a working computer). I'll ask friends tomorrow, thanks for this tip.

The CD drive started sounding funny when I tried to record what was going on on the 10th try. Like it was mad. Very possible.
