The PCLinuxOS Design Studio is open!
« on: February 25, 2012, 08:43:40 AM »
Greetings PCLinuxOSians,

The PCLinuxOS Design Studio is now open!

What is the PCLinuxOS Design Studio?  Well, I'm glad you asked.

It's a collaboration website for artwork projects that have been requested in the Artwork & Theme Requests section on the PCLinuxOS forum and it is open for any PCLinuxOS forum member to join.

Please PM me on the forum and then create an account on the website using your forum name so we know who you are. Also read the menu link "How it works" before getting started. This menu link will appear when you log into the site.

It is NOT ONLY for the contributing artists however. If you don't create graphics yourself (you should! ;D), you can still join and comment on artwork as it is progressing and suggest improvements or ideas and even vote for images that you like. The more input the better. It is a step toward encouraging more artwork collaboration and contribution for the best community driven Linux distribution.

The first project gallery is open now which is a theme for the 64bit version of PCLinuxOS KDE which Tex and the packagers are working on very hard.

See you there  ;)

Ruben, Archie, timeth.

+1    :D

I hope this project will be a success...
Why isn't this organized on the forum? => Because of a better working environment there... (easier and better upload & view capabilities, other way of commenting / rating, grouping projects, ...)

It isn't the purpose to separate the PCLinuxOS users over different places, but more a place to work well, and which is integrated with this forum.
Requests: please post them on the request board for artwork on this forum (or do I have missed a request area on the new site?)
=> I think this is the best place to post such requests (the glue between the forum and the design website)...

Have a great time using the new design website!

Although sadly I'm not one of them there are some very good "designers" on the forum so I'm looking forward to seeing what transpires.

I'm certain there will be a great deal of interest, especially in the KDE 64bit release, so this is a chance to once again show what a great OS PCLinuxOS is.

And this can help take a bit of the burden off Texstar and the Devs.

This was discussed on an old thread over at Artwork Request ... then timeth, rubentje1991 and I along with others we requested to jump in tested timeth's and ... I should say it looks more yummy than the last.

And I may add that everythig about the our Design Studio is directed at good intentions and purpose. It's really a good place for artists and talents to blend and get together.

Hi,
I just registered to the Design Studio website, in case I could contribute in any way, vote... anyhow I find it is a very beautiful web site, very well designed. Then I looked at the page "How it works" and noticed the CC license : BY-NC-SA and I have been astonished... the CC BY-SA is generally considered as a Free license, but not the NC. (GPL itself does allow commercial use of the works distributed under this license). Isn't the by-nc-sa too restrictive ? Just a question...  ::)

Hi Melodie,

Here is the license in question > http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/

Thanks for your input. I understand your concern. The reason I chose this license is because I wanted to give as much protection to the artists as possible but still allow their work to be used/remixed/altered by others. If anyone does want to use some of the artwork commercially that is submitted to the website, there is a waiver in the license as follows:

Quote
Any of the above conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.

This way, an individual artist can allow someone to use their work for commercial purposes if they choose to.

Hi,

I understand your concern very well. I know fairly well the CC licenses since their creation. I know one possibility to make it more opened without preventing anyone to choose his own license, and I would like to suggest it.

If you make the works uploaded default to by-sa:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/

with an addition such as "unless the copyright from the author says otherwise", then the default will be less restricted, while not preventing an author to put full copyright to his work if he wants to ?

I have seen such methods used on several websites before, allowing for more restricted, but making the default as open as possible without removing the authorship (in English there is probably a better way to express it, but I am sure all here will understand what I mean). Of course, this is only a suggest...

Many regards,
Mélodie

I like the sound of this.
There is a 5th dimension, beyond that which is known to man.It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity, between science& superstition,& it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call PCLINUXOS!

Hi,

I do have new wishes, concerning the features of the Studio website. Timeth, would it be possible for you to add a navigation menu, in order to be able to browse back directly from any part of the website ? Just for now, going to an image and wishing to go visit another ones, I need to cut the url to get back to the home page and browse from there again... or is there something I didn't understand about the way this website works ?

The other wish I have would be the possibility to subscribe to comments, and get notified when a new comment has been added.

If it is technically possible and not too time greedy for you, of course.

Thank you for the remarkable work you have done so far on this project !

Best,
Mélodie

Hi melodie,

The subscribe function is already active. Between the image and the comments there is a subscribe link. Click that and then select the checkbox to subscribe to the comments.

Also, under the image, there is some text that says, 'Gallery: (name of gallery)' If you click on the name of the gallery, it takes you back to the front page of that gallery. Is this what you mean?

Hi Timeth,

I had seen neither nor, so now I know where to subscribe. For the "former page" link, it is not exactly what I was thinking about, but more thinking of a navigation menu.

Example:

From home page,

http://www.pclinuxosdesign.com > http://www.pclinuxosdesign.com/node/53 (which has not for name "node", but "Openbox Bonsai theme gallery") > http://www.pclinuxosdesign.com/node/66 (which has really for name not "node" but 2stripe bonsai") > http://www.pclinuxosdesign.com/sites/default/files/openbox-bonsai1.png

From the last link, I would have liked to be able to come back to any of the former links which constitute the path navigation I followed. On some websites we can find them at the top, just under the header or at the bottom part of the header. Do you think you could find a method to implement a feature looking like that ?

Thanks. :)

Hi Timeth,

It is much more practical ! Thanks a lot for your efforts.
